Have you installed Sony Picture Motion Browser Ver 2.0.01 on your Windows 7 machine before? It might not be compatible with Windows 7.0 -

Yes I have, from the CD before it broke and it worked.
I found this about the USB cable so why does the Sony download manager insist on the camcorder being connected?
The USB cable is supplied for the transfer of JPEGs (still pictures) and for the camcorder to be used as a webcam. An optional iLink cable will be required for full quality video footage to PMB. Using iLink will also enable video footage to be transferred and edited on other software programmes such as " Windows Movie Maker " or " Sony Vegas " etc.

Yes, your best bet is to use the FireWire(iLink ) connection, then you can just use Windows Movie Maker or similar. Sony are just too annoying with their proprietary software.
If you don't have a FireWire card, they are cheap and easy to fit.
For example; this pack for under £7. Perhaps can be found even cheaper.0 -

Strange!
It says that if you want to transfer your 'movies', don't use the USB option. So forget about USB and move to FireWire/iLink. You'll be a happier man for it.0 -
So forget about USB
I never ever used USB to upload my videos to my computer, it was what the Sony download manager wanted me to do.
Just had a reply from Sony.
Their solution?
Use Windows Movie Maker.
Must be great for a company to have such faith in their own software. (There should be a sarcastic smiley here but I cant find it)
If I ever buy a replacement camcorder I don't think I will buy a Sony.
Just installed Movie Maker and it works OK, it doesn't control the camera but at least I can now download my holiday videos to inflict on my grandkids.0 -

I have managed to get a copy of the software so you can all stop looking now (if you were)
