Water Supply Insurance

I have just been junk mailed regarding a 99p per month insurance policy from United Utilities (using Homeserve). It covers problems with the water supply pipe that runs into my house from the communal pipe that I am told I am responsible for. I checked my boiler / pluming cover and that does not cover it. For 12 pounds a year I am happy to risk it and then rethink it next year.
What does anybody else think?

Pay it if you think its worth while £12.00 wont break the bank.0

It depends on your attitude to risk. If you stopped 100 people in the street and asked them if they had ever had a problem with their water supply pipe, I doubt you would find many that have.
Also - check your house insurance. You may find that you are already covered anyway.0 -

Mike.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

As has been said, check your buildings insurance as it may already be covered.0

I saved several hundreds of pounds when homeserve replaced my water supply during the heavy snow in london last year. Now I have a plastic pipe.0 -
Depends on your supply pipe. My dad lives in a terraced house where the front door opens straight onto the pavement. His supply pipe runs from a manhole in the pavement a foot from the front door to his main stopc*ck which is under the floor just inside the front door - all of two feet!
I live in the country and have a large fron garden. My supply pipe runs under 100 feet of front garden, under the entire house, and up throught the floor of the kitchen at the rear, which is where my stopc*ck is.
A bit of a difference in risk: both in the likelihood of a problem occurring somewhere along the length, and the likely cost of repair.
Another factor of course is that although liability for the supply pipe from the street lies with the home-owner, many water companies will cover the cost of the first repair needed (though probobly not on an urgent call-out basis which these insurances promise). Worth checking this with the water company.0 -
Hi There am I right have the rules changed are we still responsible for any burst leak etc on your water supply pipe anywhere in your property, seem to remember having read that water companies are now responsible but can't find it. I've just had my renewal for £47.00 for the year???0

Many water companies will repair pipes free of charge but not if they are difficult to access (eg under a garage).
Check what your water company's policy is before paying anything.
Replacing a water main can be expensive but the chances of a problem are very low.We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.
We belong to the Earth0 -
Water companies haven't adopted shared or sole water pipes, only lateral and shared drainage systems.
As for the insurance, if you feel it is wise to have the peace of mind then yes, but as above it can be quite rare that you will have a problem.0
