Trailer Tyre Size

Options
Hi All

Hope someone can help?

Im doing up an old car trailer (4'x6') and looks like its an old mini chassis.

Tyres on it are 145sr10 (68s-315kg) and do not list under the conventional 'tyre' fitting services on the high street.

Q/ What other size trye could I go up to, 'bog-standard and easily available', that would not mean changing the sub frame.

I've got plenty of side wall and height clearance to play with as the wheel and arches sit inside the trailer and the tyre side wall to chassis has over 1/2" each side. Height of tyre from rim to arches is ok as I havnt built them yet

Any help would be appreciated

Regards

Andy

    Try 145/80 R10 It's a standard Mini size.

They used to be dirt cheap but not any more. 165/70 R10 can sometimes be cheaper.

Car tyres are not always suitable for trailers and caravans. if you are planning on carrying any weight you may need van/ load bearing tyres

depending on the weight you need to carry you'll probably find most trailer places will do a new wheel and tyre to fit mini hubs for £30 or £40 all in.

In the old days we'd have just gone down the scrapyard and got some

If you have the room go upto 12 or 13" wheels.

300kg tyres will give you a gross weight of 600kg. That includes the weight of the trailer and any load.

Mini's dont have a chassis they had a subframe. Is that what the wheels are attacked to? Swing arms
    and rubber suspension cones?

The unladen weight of a mini is about 600kgs, split 50/50 front back.

So that's about 300kg + about the same in people and luggage, makes the maximum load of the trailer about 600kg, so 2 300kg 4 ply 145 x 10 trailer tyres would be fine.
Towsure have them, with and without rims, or any 10" mini tyre.

    All vehicles have a chassis.

Except mini's have subframes which carries all the suspension and running gear.

Old Land Rover's etc have a chassis, Modern cars have a monocoque construction and mini's
    had subframes.

Old Land Rover's have a frame on to which all the components that make up the chassis are fixed to. Minis have a cut down version of the Land Rover type frame (two, I believe) called a subframe.

On monocoque cars the chassis components are fixed directly to the body.

<pedant> Old Land Rovers have a ladder chassis, to which a separate body is then attached, Modern cars have a monocoque chassis where the bodywork is part of the overall construction of the chassis.
