Reduced Council tax for students

Options
Not sure if this has been posted before but with council tax bills going up again soon I thought it would be worth mentioning. If you are a student - even if you live in a household where other people work - you can get a deduction on your council tax. I believe this varies in each district so best get in touch with your own council, you then need - as far as I'm aware confirmation from your Uni admin that you are a full time student and send this to the council tax office.

Hope this helps someone!

If you are a full time student you are exempt from council tax regardless of which council you are under.
  • For my council, lancashire, I need a tenancy agreement sent to the tax office, as well as, a piece of paper from the uni saying I attend.

They then cross reference this info with a list the uni sent the council
  • for my council, bury, you need an exemption ceritificate from your uni, i currently get free council tax as i live alone but when my oh moves in we will only get the 25% single person's discount.
:T The best things in life are FREE! :T

If their are two or more non-students in the property then no discount can be given - the discount is standardised in law and applies across all councils in England and Wales.

If all the people in a property are F/t students then a 100% exemption applies for this period.

Both unis I've been to automatically hand out Council Tax exemption forms at Student registration at the beginning of each year. I'm surprised all unis don't do that.

Regardless of the situation regarding houses where not all tenants are student and 25% single person discounts it remains the case that all full time students are council tax exempt. For example in freebie_junkie's once his/her other half moves in it is they who will be liable for the council tax and who will recieve a 25% discount. In this case it may be considered a technicality since they will look on it as a joint bill but in houses shared between groups of friends it is the non-students who will have to pay the council tax on the whole of the house (with or without 25% single person discount depending on how many non-students are in the house) and the students will have to pay nothing.

Technically the students are disregarded and the property can then be exempted if all occupants are students.

Yeah. You are right. What I meant was that full time students are not liable for council tax so even if the property isn't exempt from council tax they won't be the ones liable to pay it.

Quite true, that was one of the faults with council tax that was done away with a few years ago - (who's idea was it to make students jointly liable even though they where disregarded  )
