    Thanks for all your advice.
I am not a new e bay seller, which makes this mistake on my part even worse.
There was no way to track this package even at £38. And yes I should have stopped the sale at this point.
I had thought I had no foreign buyers by saying on my choices UK only.
I will try to fight this in the best way I can, I have saved the e mails asking for the cheap postage.
I know that I am going to loose out here but wont go quietly.

go quietly? you made the decision to leave yourself open to this?
plenty of couriers out there to use and with this kind of value involved it wouldnt have left me until i knew i was covered

The problem is everyone always thinks selling online is so easy. So they never spend 10 minutes stop to check the best and safest way to do it. In part its ebays fault as they have always promoted how easy it is to sell and buy without Highlighting sellers responsibility in all this.

If i was going to sell through any other avenue be it bootsale, shop, Jumble sale or Newspaper I would know what is required so why do people not do that for ebay?

I really think there needs to be a limit the the value of goods that can be sold on ebay for new sellers. That way if a mistake is made they wouldn't lose the amounts similar to the OP. There are probably huge holes in that idea but its sad the amount of people who lose large amounts of money due to not understanding the basics of things like Postal insurance and tracking.

I really feel for the OP as that's a lot of money to lose.
I think you can blame eBay for a lot - as well as the community aspect blurring some of the responsibilities a seller has in law, which Amazon IMO has always avoided given it presents itself as a proper business rather than trying to grow a "social network" on top of everything - but you can't blame them for people not taking proper responsibilities themselves. I agree eBay makes it look easy.

There are limits now imposed on new sellers, but in terms of volume, not value. I fully agree - I think it should be driven by value too.

Out of £337 you could have easily funded tracked postage at £38 at your cost. It would have protected the bulk of the payment and saved you from disaster. I'd rather have £300 out of £337 than £0 out of £337.

Nothing will do you any good here, so go quietly or not, it's going to be a hard lesson learned. Particularly since you aren't a new seller, it makes this kind of attitude a lot more egregious.

OP even if it is lost though you have no way of reclaiming for loss assuming you used Royal Mail as they do not cover phones going overseas over the value of £46 regardless of what service you used.
That's a very interesting point. I'm guessing OP and others would like to know how seasoned mobile phone sellers safely despatch and insure mobile phones with a value of more than £46?

As per custardy - couriers. However I am a wimp and only sell my mobiles within the Uk and use special delivery- I know i ought to be braver but I just can't manage with couriers.

Same here. Is it true that the Nigerians have started registering their accounts in the UK though, to get round the "block bidders in countries I don't ship to" block?

Egregious = Conspicuously bad or offensive.
Oops thats a bit harsh, I certainly did not think my post warranted this reply. I did say I should have done it differently, I thought I may have found others who have had the same sort of experiance.

Thanks, but I was thinking more along the lines of a recommndation of specific couriers and/or specific courier services known to cover the OP's situation ... thus avoiding anyone in the OP's situation having to read through screens of small print offered by each service provider, to try to deduce if the T & Cs cover them.

I use transglobal to ship overseas. collectmyparcel also have good quotes for international carriers. DHL by road for europe, or air for the rest of the world.
At below the hundred quid mark, I've also sent ISF to Eire. I'm aware of the lack of insurance, but do get online tracking there.
