I would like to see them try court on this, They would loose the case.

Its always best to let them rectify it , court action isnt always the best route think your jumping the gun. Op I would ask them to rebill on the correct type of meter first

I have never known a metric gas meter to have only 4 digits. Are you sure that the meter wasn;t changed at some point after you signed up to Scottish Power from an imperial to a metric one?

Looking at my spreadsheet here (because I'm too lazy to go down to the meter to look) I see that my meter readings only have 4 digits too.

Yup.. just checked the bills and 4 digits for metric gas is correct.

That could just be dropping of the leading zero, but the OP's readings indicated 4 digit register rollover. Please go down and look at your meter, you lazy tortoise...:D
  • Hi everyone. Many apologies, I've given some duff info. The reading of 8233 was from the first bill which I've looked at very carefully and is an estimate.

It's a 5 digit meter. I have dug out my paperwork from the house move in December 2009 and my gas meter reading was 00574. It looks like Scottish power never applied this reading when I opened my account, but I'm sure I rang and registered it with them.

So is the 1 October reading "02470"?

If you can prove its more than 2 years since Scottish Power read the meter, or that they (or their agents) read it but failed to spot the issue, then you can really be empowered to get a good outcome.

Though the question asked in another post about a meter change is a good one.

Stick one on them for us all:D.

Indeed, which is why I said "if you can prove its more than 2 years since Scottish Power read the meter..."...

Regarding "indoors", I think the legislative requirement is "to make every effort" but I'd be surprised if a "2 year failure", because of access, didn't result in the premises being attempted more frequently, and eventually a calling-card for the OP. Of course if that was ignored that is a different matter entirely.

As a "posted matter of fact" there has been an "industry failure". It's really up to Scottish Power to respond.

Yes it is, sorry I omitted the leading zero.

The meter is outside, next to the front door in a floor based housing (sort of under a bush but accessible). It's not been changed since I moved in (it has either 2006 or 2008 written on it)

Here's some more info., I've just spoken to my mother, apparently whilst I was away earlier this year, a guy came to read the meter, looked at it and said something along the lines of "that's not right, you better sort that out". She forgot to tell me!

(oh and Scottish Power managed to read the electric meter about 4 times in the same period that the gas meter wasn't read).

I can only think he was referrring to the bush. It is the meter reader's job to report back meter problems, not yours.
