  • Very difficult area.

If he's fit and healthy I'm not sure it makes much difference either way.

If he falls into one of the risk groups then he should probably at least go and talk to his GP about it.

However, he's a big lad and he should be able to make his own decision. One good dose of the flu should concentrate his mind!

Seriously though, I think it's up to him.

I dont think this jab suits everyone, I had it five years ago because everyone thought I should and have never felt so ill in my life, took me about three weeks to get over it.

I will never have another and would not try to persuade anyone else to.

I paid for a jab last year (at Boots) as I didnt qualify - all round here people were dropping like flies with a really bad dose of flu - so I thought it was worthwhile to do. My OH also paid to have it. Ive only had flu twice in my life and be assured its not just a "bad cold" that people seem to call flu a lot nowdays - its hellish and I can see how it can be fatal.

I really don't understand why anyone would turn down the offer of a free flu vaccination.

As has been said flu is a terrible illness much worse than a cold and the vaccination itself is very safe with only minor problems for the vast majority of people.

My brother will be 65 next Sat, 8th Oct.

He got a letter from the NHS saying that now he is 65 he is entitled to a free flu jab and to contact his doctor.

He isn't going to accept it as he has never had the flu in his life, I told him he should.

    What do others think?

    Flu jab or not?

really ? if thats true thats amazing

I used to work for a company that made flu jabs.

Everyone on the staff could have a free jab at about this time of year.
About half used to opt out.
    I always had mine.
They always gave it to us on a Thursday so if we had a reaction, we could suffer with mini flu over the weekend in our own time (??).
The firm got excited about getting a contract to do the whole population in USA, as there was a bird flu panic that year - until they realised why medical negligence insurance is so high over there.

I've not had flu in the last 40 years, not had a jab since 1980, so now I'm a pensioner perhaps I should go along and have another free one.

Now that the world has [STRIKE]three[/STRIKE] four times the population of 100 years ago, is it just a matter of time:

  • I get it free and am very pleased to do so. In addition, there is the pneumonia vaccine which you only need to have once in your life and you will never, apparently, get pneumonia. I have had pneumonia and it is awful, absolutely awful, and knocks off a good few old people. So definitely worth having the flu and pneumonia jab at one session.

(Had no problems with the flu vaccine, a little sore perhaps for a few days, but far better than getting flu - and last year, at least, it contained whatever the latest flu problem was deemed to be (can't remember if it was bird or swine, can just remember being told it was one flu jab)).

Anyway, well worth it for the pneumonia vaccine if nothing else. Very grateful to the NHS (and the taxpayer, of which I'm one) for this.

I hope I get the pneumonia jab. I also had it once, in my early thirties and I remember being in a delirious state in a hospital bed, the curtains closed with fans on all round me and jabs in my bottom every few hours. My lung collapsed. They told me afterwards it had been touch and go. Considering I was a fit young woman at that time - and it took me a couple of months to get over it - I dont know how I would be at double that age now.
