diseased apple tree

The start of the cut on the top of the branch is made as close as posible to the trunk but at an angle that will give the smallest surface area of exposed wood and has been mentioned above : in stages to avoid tearing.
I would post a link to my Sons website which shows a tree that he is working on but that would be interperated as spamming.
Edit : One thing, if you lightly scrape the orange is it green underneath then as you go deeper ,white ??

Could you PM me the link to your son's website so I can take a look?
Thanks
I will pm the link for you ...Look under "pictures of work/Tree work" .the reason I asked the question was that some branches have a habit of this especially if there is a lot of pressure on it and the orange colour may be bark that is not mature under the flaking old stuff ..I have a wonderful dual purpose tree called Monarch that bears large crops of huge apples that does the very same thing so if you see green then deeper down white, there is no die back and the the leaves grow normally the branch is probably ok.

There is no green or white beneath the orange colouring - it just looks like "normal" wood.
I'm not sure how to post a picture, having taken one!0 -

Could this be apple canker? It can sometimes manifest as peeling rather than the knarly 'cankers' that appear on the bark. I use Bordeaux Mixture in Autumn and after apple harvest then another at half leaf drop to prevent this. Our apple tree was badly infected with canker and scab when we moved in and it surived and is now cropping nicely too0
