Been paying AOL for 12 years for nothing

A friends husband has just died. Looking through his cc statements, his wife has noticed he'd still been paying AOL for 12 years, after changing to BT Internet! Bloke (apparently) never ever looked at his cc statements.AOL have offered 6 months repayments but she doesn't know what to do? Suggestions?

  • Phone the bank/cc company. Was it by Direct debit? When my wife's gym failed to cancel the direct debit, they still took money for a year. Natwest immediately refunded her.

From the information you supply I do not think you have much chance of getting the money refunded unless you can prove that he requested them to cancel the account when he transferred to BT. He probably still had access to AOL even though he never used it so they were still providing a service which he was paying for.

Was it a joint account? Another reason why mandates and direct debits are never worth having. If they are offering 6 months, try to nidge them by saying you believe 12 months would be fairer in the light the service was not used, nut you certainly cannot insist upon it. If they won't budge, it is better than nothing.

The customers ALWAYS has a responsibility to ensure they pay only the people they want to - being unaware or ignorant of the fact is no defence (as people tho gave firms a DD that was never taken can STILL be sued for non payment).
