Low Disk Space???

I keep getting a little speech bubble pop up at the bottom right of my screen saying 'Low Disk Space'. If I click on it I get a window open that says Disk Cleanup for HP_Recovery (D:) but there isn't anything to clear (Recycle Bin 0KB and Catalog files for the Content Indexer 0KB).

I've looked at disk space on HP_RECOVERY D: drive and it's got 5.66GB used and 39.6MB free.

I'm worried about deleting something by mistake if I start clearing stuff :o Any suggestions please?

Thanks

How much left on your C: drive?
  • Try CCleaner from piriform.com it will guide you through a disk clean up and get rid of things like temporary internet files.

You don't need to worry, ignore the message, the recovery disk is for recovery ie reset to factory state. Nothing should be put on there, and nothing needs to be cleared.

...unless the OP has been storing data there which can be cleared.....?

You should know if you've been putting stuff there.

When you save a document, spreadsheet, etc - where do you save them? If you don't know, you should.

When you download something, again, where do you tend to save it? Again, if you don't know, you should.

Without knowing what you use your PC for, I can't think of more examples, but this is what I meant - you should know where you've saved your own data.

Download WinDirStat to your C: drive, run it on both the C: and D: drives and it will show you graphically what you have on your PC

Sounds very plausible. It wouldn't take much in the way of accidentally placed files to trigger the warning. Or might there be some software on the machine that is misconfigured to write to the D drive?

tbh, 5.7GB for a recovery partition sounds about right, not like the massively over-sized partitions that some manufacturers set up thus wasting hdd space.....

The HP_Recovery partition is just so you can restore the computer back to its original state, as though it was brand new. It doesn't need space clearing on it. I would be inclined to disable the low disk space warnings:

Yes the steps involve registry editing, but they are straightforward and easy enough for anyone who has the ability to carefully follow instructions.
