London Marathon 2012

Didn't make the ballot for it however, I don't think Virgin have a right to keep my entry fee:mad:

I was told by one of the Virgin staff that I had ticked the box and donated my entry fee something I do not remember doing.

I said can I have my money back but was told because of this it is highly unlikely, she went on; if you do not believe you done this then we will send you out a copy of your online application form showing this however, anyone at Virgin can doctor an online form so that proves nowt!

If they do this to every entrant, It is not Richard Branson who sponsors this event, it is us the general public which means he may even make a tidy profit after deductions of his sponsoring of the event.

Entrants I reckon, who do not make the ballot, probably don't even check their bank accounts.

I'll ring their head Office first thing Monday because I'm furious at this!

    Hi,
I also entered the ballot but didn't want to pay the entry fee upfront. At no stage was I asked for any bank / card details. While you may not remember doing so, I believe the only way you could have been charged the entry fee was if you ticked the box AND then went on to enter your payment details.
    Sorry !

  • What's worse is that you'll now receive one of those awful purple fleecies.
I also failed in the ballot but I chose not to donate my entry fee and didn't give payment details so have not been charged.

I was careful filling out the form!
I remember at the beginning of the form being informed that If I did not make the ballot, my entry fee would be credited back to my bank account.

I only gave my bank details because without so doing, I could not have been considered in the ballot in the first place.

Since I am not in work at present, I would not have chosen the donation fee box...I think Virgin have totally screwed up here!

p.s Why has this thread now been hidden? I can't find it any where other than at the point it was moved from.

You didn't have to pay anything upfront. Names went into the ballot exactly the same whether people paid the fee upfront or not. From memory, it did say quite clearly that you can choose to pay upfront and that if you weren't successful in getting in then the money would go to charity instead.

To say it screws you up isn't a great argument, you entered in the first place and therefore must have considered the possibility of getting a place and therefore paying the fee.

I also entered and didn't get a place but no fee has been deducted from my account. Look at the plus side though you get a nice fleece now!
  • I entered, and I did get a place, but it was only provisional until I paid my fee...so it is possible to get a place without donating your fee.

This was my 6th attempt at the ballot on 2 of the previous years I have donated my fee and ended up with running jackets...nice...hmm you must have just not read it properly, take it as a lesson, learn from it and move on.

No, I said VIRGIN SCREWED UP! and it looks as though I got shafted in the process.

And I certainly from recollection, did not choose the donation box as I am not working and could not afford charity giving.

There was no intention of donating to gain a place...what's up with you!!
Next year I'll complete the online form and do screen grabs along the way then I'll have irrefutable evidence.

Well done for editing your post to make mine look incorrect.

Anyway it's besides the point. You said in your original post that if Virgin did this to every customer they'd be making a profit, I think this thread proves that this hasnt happened. Did you happen to be in a bit of a rush when you filled out the form?
