Car insurance question..

DH's driving instructor told him today that you can't have 2 insurance policies on one car, even though we'll both be using the car (He's currently a named driver on my insurance.) so does that mean he won't be able to get his own seperate insurance so he can start building his no claims?? I just thought it was a case of taking him off my insurance as a named driver???

Driving instructor is correct.
One of you will need to be named on the others policy.
I seem to recall an ad on TV in the last few days from Direct Line indicating that named drivers will build up their own NCD as well. Not heard of anyone else doing this.0 -
Your OH's driving instructor is correct. There can not be 2 seperate insurance policies for the same car, but you can have more than 1 driver on 1 policy. There will only be 1 main policy holder and the others will be "named drivers"Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

So the only way that DH can earn his own no claims that all companies will accept is to get a different car? That seems a bit daft!!! Obviously it'd save us money compared to having 2 whole insurance policies but if he has an accident when he's passed his test would it affect my no claims??Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

Direcrt line will give named drivers a no claims bonus, but this no claims bonus will only be recognised if that named driver then takes out a policy in their own right with direct line. Other insurance comapnies will not recognise this no claims bonus as it is not from the main driver of the policyBaby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

The only other option is to switch the policy so that he is the PH and you are the ND but then you cannot use your NCD, wouldnt accrue any more yourself (obviously not an issue if you are on max ncd) and realistically would have to switch every year as unused NCD is only honoured for 2 yearsAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Ok - you both want to earn No claims discount. Either you are contemplating divorce in the near future or you must be considering getting a second car at some point. Why not bring that forward. Even getting a cheap as chips scooter and insuring that will allow your husband to build his NCD. He doesn't have to ride it. Then when you do get the second car, he will have some NCD built up.0

Well I've got 3 yrs no claims (Will be 4 in October all being well.) so obviously it's going to be much cheaper to just keep him on my insurance but at renewal I'm going to have to opt for protected no claims, just in case!!!
Also at the moment the premium for the 2 of us is £360ish... when he passes his test will the premiums go up or down??? We're with churchill.
Thanks all for your help and advice! Still think it's stupid that if we both want to earn no claims we either have to get a 2nd car, divorce or switch to directline.. *ah well* C'est la vie.Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

Well, direct line and churchill are both brands of RBS but at present only DL and Tesco (another RBS brand) offer it at the moment.
Typically premiums will go up when someone passes their driving test as they no longer have a "responsible & experienced driver" having to over see themAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers
