I've pulled this regulation guidance note off of a government site regarding concessions and benefits:

If you are the driverIf you are the disabled person receiving one of the qualifying benefits as detailed above, the vehicle must be used by you, or for your purposes only, as below. If the car is used by someone else for their personal use, then the appropriate excise duty must be paid.

If you are not the driver
Someone else can drive the vehicle for you but the vehicle must be used for your purposes - for example, for taking you to the doctor or for doing your shopping, with you present. If the vehicle is being used for the driver's own personal requirements, and you are not in the car, then the appropriate rate of vehicle excise duty must be paid.
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

So in theory all the parents who have a motability car for their children are expected to drive their child to school, leave the car there as they are not able to drive it back, then walk back down to school pick up child and collect car at the same time

    Exactly!! Thats just plain silly!!

I'm also worried as we choose not to have a motability car as one which would be suitable for our family to travel together would be more expensive than keeping a privately owned car on the road, so if Motorbility may have found a way round this (someone said they keep the log book?), what about those who have a privately owned car?

the dla know the age of the child and they know the car is a family 1 they would not issue the tax or motorbility if that is the case.

if you take your child to school then you ARE using it for their purpose so no you wouldn't have to leave the car.

you can use the car FOR that person without them present if you have ved. it say's so on the leaflet.(ie you can use the car alone to do their shopping, fetch things etc).

In my understanding if you are a parent and use it to go shopping then you are using it for that child as that child is in your family and needs feeding.

Could anyone help me on the latter part of my original post please?

p.s. on the application form are there any specific words this elderly person should be including to substantiate their claim?

    Many thanks.

Just a little story. Arrived at Glasgow airport last Sunday morning at 4.15 am taking my niece and her 4 year old daughter for a flight to Amsterdam. Stopped at the setting down bay, and on account of the amount of baggage, I helped her as best I could to the check in, and returned to find two policemen looking over the car (I am an OAP, and a Blue badge holder, which was displayed in the car). This was less than 5 minutes after arriving. I genuinely didn't know that there is NO waiting at this point. No amount of begging would get them to let me off. Got A £30 fixed penalty. So much for Blue badges! So much for Strathclyde police!
    Cheers, Dave

No, I know - airports don't "recognise" Blue Badges - and neither do Westminster and Camden councils in London - they have their own system for residents only.

I think this should be addressed, as it is surely contrary to the Disability Discrimination Act to disadvantage those with mobility problems in this way.:(

  • In the instance the OP mentions above, the car was not being parked for the benefit of a person with disabilities but so that an able-bodied person could unpack their luggage and take it to the checkin. The OP did not need to go into Departures for their own use. Therefore, from the quotes given above, their blue badge parking was invalid.

    That's if I've understood correctly.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Point taken, but 5 minutes (yes) and 4.15 in a morning? Would you let a woman with a 4 year old and two large suitcases plus a pushchair manage unaided. I managed to push a luggage trolley with the suitcases mainly by using the trolley as a prop!
It's obviously a revenue raising and police targets thing.

I can understand your frustration at the seeming 'jobsworth' attitude but I guess there has to be a zero tolerance in many places where there parking is at a premium. Having said that, the blue badge shouldn't have been used as a get out clause as it wasn't valid in this situation. Even if there were toddler friendly designated parking areas, you can bet these would be entirely abused on a daily basis at places like airports so I guess the company has no choice but to treat everyone as equal.

Hope they had a good holiday anyway :)

I would love to get a BB for my mum, she is 74 with mobility & heart problems, but her GP is an absolute Git and will not sign the form. He says they have been asked to clamp down on authorising them because of an increased abuse of the system!!!
