I was going to buy so daffs for our new house late last year but I now dont move until 1st Feb.

One question regarding daffs as I dont have a large garden I will rely on pots a lot can I plant daffs and once dead take them up and store them for later that year? Thanks

As I understand it it takes 6 weeks after the flower has died for the leaves to get sufficient nourishment down into the bulb so it can grow/bloom well the following spring.

Be patient and maybe use 'old tights' or approach your local greengrocer that sells loose onions for the 'mesh sack' usually thrown out to store bulbs in.

    Couple of further thoughts

    1. Some people also give the daffs a feed (during the 6 week period the bulb is taking in nourishment for the next years blooms)

    2. If short of storage space for your bulbs you could always leave them in the pot (write a label to remind yourself) & get rid of the leaves after the 6 weeks and plant annuals etc raised from seed.

    3. BOGOF Prices of Wilkinsons Seeds on Fri 19/1/07

Wilkinsons own Seeds prices I took a note of were:

Flowers from 39p and Veg also from 39p

There are Wilkinson's Multi packs - ie 6 varieties for £2.29 details are:

    Vegetables 6 x herbs
    6 x Lettuce leaves
    6 x Mixed Salad leaves
    6 x different tomatoes

    Flowers 6 x bedding favourites
    6 x patio plants
    6 x sunflowers
    6 x sweet peas

Johnston's Flowers & Veg seeds prices were assorted - also Bogof re the cheapest

I only have pots at mo that have some daffs in, I am constantly buying plants in growing months and always seem to dig up bulbs etc. Best way would be to have pots for bulbs only but at mo I am short of space. As I am moving very soon I have a garden only small but plenty of space along walls, paths for pots. I also have a old garage to store pots in so as you sugegsted probably best using pots for bulbs and pots of other things. I love seeing daffs and other bulbs in Spring my favourite time fo teh year, oh I cant wait.

Neighbour told me that a woman came prepared with not only scissors but also a bag and cut off a huge bunch of the best ones!

I found a box of bulbs in my shed. They are sprouting. Is it futile to plant them or shall I just do it and hope for the best? I suppose like one of the posters earlier, better in the ground than in the shed?

How selfish some people are! She will be the only one to get any pleasure from them, and only for a week at most, choosing to deprive all of the passers-by of something bright to cheer their day up. A sad but true indicator of the mentality of many people in the UK these days.

Go for it - Not sure how many bulbs you have but if there is enough to fill a wirework shape/basket or plastic colander (idea posted elsewhere) and sink the 'container' into the ground. Then 6 weeks after you have had the flower & fed the foilage them you will find it easier to locate & lift them for storeage.

Thanks for your reply to my 'selfish daff picker'. The wayside garden in on the way to the station and in prev yrs many commuters said the 'sea of yellow' lifted their spirits after being in central London. Ah well - let's be thankful that the bulbs are still there for next yr.

Hi, I planted the bulbs, There were about 50. Most of them had a little green tip showing. I binned the ones that were soft, but there were only 5 or 6 of them. I have planted them in groups of 4 or five at various points in the garden and I put some in the garden wall too (one of those with soil between the two rows of bricks for planting in). I don't know how they will do, but worst case they rot in the ground, best case they come up and flower. I had nothing to lose so I had a go.

I'll try to remember to let you know how they do. With the seasons all over the place at the moment it could be anybody's guess.

  • What a lot we are! I found a bag of bulbs today. I remember digging them up in the summer when I redid a bit of my garden, but didn't get round to putting them back in. They're firm and starting to sprout. I've planted them and will see what happens.
