  • I am another who does a monthly shop as I also get paid monthly. I try to get all the basics I will need for the month, then just buy milk veg and dairy as I need it. I always get a load of cooking marg flour and bread flour and tins of stuff so that at the end of the month (now for me) I can still produce a meal. Some of them are a bit unusual though.

THis is what I have done for the beginning of Jan , Feb March and it seems to be working well. I have spent a lot less money, we have eaten very well and rather surprisingly seem to have a full freezer and cupboard still!

Hi, need some help please, i used to shop online up until about a year ago, i would get paid, work out rough menus for the month ,then order online. I don't drive and with having two young kids it was a lot easier for me. The trouble was my good intentions never went to plan, i always ended up using up the food before the month was up. So i went back to "manual" weekly shopping and it cost me a fortune. To cut a long story short which kind of shopping do you prefer and which one works out most cost effective for you?

    thanks in advance,
    lisa
  • Wll in theory it's the online shop as I spend around £70.00 and thats in between 1-2 weeks worth, a litttle more than one week but not enough for 2.

BUT I always need to top up and will inevitably go to Tesco or Sainsburys for milk bread etc. and Inevitably always walk out with around £70.00 worth of stuff as well.

If I can lure myself away from the shops and stick to the online shop and use what I have in the freezer it would deffo be the online shop, I am less tempted to impulse buy.

Monthly or six weekly online and monthly at Costco for us with top ups for fruit and veg only but there are only two of us. I don't menu plan but I do buy pretty much the same stuff every month so we don't usually get caught out. I also hate supermarket shopping so do most things to avoid having to actually go!

I've switched back to a breadmaker to avoid having to stock so much bread in the freezer or having to buy during the month. Neither of us drink milk, we have soya which we buy longlife, so I guess with kids you need more milk - Dad still has a milkman which saves him going out so often, I'm not sure how that prices out though compared to having to go somewhere and buy milk?

Bulk shopping is more economical for us and much more pleasant!

I shop weekly for most items. So much of the stuff I buy doesn't last a month, so I couldn't go that long between shopping.

Shopping weekly does in theory give you greater access to the changing offers and reduced counter too, but I know it also encourages many people to spend more and impulse buy. I'm getting better at not impulse buying and avoiding expensive things I don't really need.

As I don't have a car, weight is also a big problem. The occasional home delivery to stock up on heavy things like rice and washing powder helps a lot, so I wouldn't entirely give up on the home delivery shopping, I just couldn't go a month between shopping.

I find that shopping online once every two weeks works perfectly. A month is too much for my cupboards and freezer.:)

I buy a months worth of bulky stuff on line. Generally dog food, cat food, spuds, loo roll, washing powder, alcohol, cereal, anything tinned and 3kg bags of pasta.

I like to buy my fruit, veg, fish and meat in person.
