aol..how to cancel?

Hiya :)
Maybe a daft question ( sorry if it is! :o ) but how do I go about cancelling AOL ?

Have read that I shouldn't ask to cancel as such as they'll turn off my broadband but to request my mac code.
Can I do this via email? I don't fancy phoning as I always have trouble hearing whats being said..
dunno if its my phone or ears!! It just ends up making me flustered!

Can't see the point in sticking with them when I have an orange contract so will be going for their 8meg for a fiver deal.

Thanks for reading :)

  • Just ring em up and ask for it. Tell them you're not interested in any special deals. You might have problems getting your MAC because some companies can be awkward at giving it you. They may even charge but I've posted a link somewhere on here about MAC. As of 14th of next month broadband suppliers must give it you free of charge.
This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down

There is no problem phoning about this, but if you are determined to leave (and aren't interested in any offer they might make you to try and get you to stay with them), then when they ask why you want to leave tell them a white lie that you are now employed by another isp who will provide your connection for you. If they ask who say you'd rather not say. This will save a lot of time.

They are OK about giving you the MAC (which gets e-mailed to you).

But note that this is not taken as a cancellation by AOL.

You need to use the MAC, then when your new ISP has taken over and you are connected to them contact AOL again to confirm the cancellation. They will then give you a cancellation ref number and close your account. If you don't do this they just keep on billing you.
  • hello again :)
Thankyou for the replys. I found an email cancellation which I did last night and recived a reply this morning saying I had to ring. Did so and spoke to a man who said I'd have to ring tomorrow but I insisted I wanted to speak to cancellations. Spoke to a lovely lady who was more than helpfull. Explained that I wanted the MAC so I had it ready for if I decided to switch. She sent me her email address so I can contact her with any questions and said my MAC will be emailed within the next 48-72 hours. When asked for reasons I eplained family members had recived bad servcie from carphone warehouse/ talk talk etc so I was unkeen to stick with them but hadn't yet fully decided. Did say I was a valued customer etc etc and they would possibly beable to do something for me.
Will have to wait and see now!!
    Thanks again :)
