I'm currently three months into a 12 month contract with NTL for 2MB broadband package at 17.99 per month.

Sky broadband is now available in my area and I want to move but obviously I can't cancel my NTL without paying up the contract.

I've just had some info through the post today from Virgin explaining that Virgin.net, NTL and Telewest have joined forces to create Virgin Media providing TV, broadband, phones and mobiles etc..

I was wondering would any know whether this change in company name etc would be good enough grounds to cancel my NTL contract without paying up the contract as in their T&C's it says you can cancel without charge if there are changes to the services provided.

Technically there aren't any changes to the services however it is quite a big change to change company and start being billed by Virgin Media etc. Anyone have any clues??

I doubt it - the T&C's of service providers usually have a clause to allow the contract for services to be transferred to another company (either through sub-contracting the service, or the company being bought-out).

eg, I assume NTL's T&C's contain such a clause. A quick search, and this maybe the paragraph which covers this circumstance:-
