When I was up at Mr S before the staff were telling me they have told management if heat is not on in store tomorrow they are refusing to work, as its freezing in there - I noticed it when I popped in quickly just for milk this morning how cold it was and a couple of staff I know were on and expected to wear Olympic tee-shirts over shorts and they had got flags and tied them over as cloaks as they were so cold.
Tonight all the staff had on fleeces and were still cold.
It is cold and wet pure urg.......and tomorrow 1st August the hottest month:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

We haven't even taken ours off this year! I feel the cold really badly at night, even in 'summer'

Got to giggle. EON's sent me a bill stating my electricity meter was read by a meter reader (dunno when, there has not been one in the house since December 2011) So I gave appropriate readings etc, now I get a letter saying 'If we do not hear from you in 14 days there WILL be a large increase in your direct debit'. Tad threatening I feel, if they increase it by a lot I will be going elsewhere!
Hiya nikki2804
This doesn't sound right at all, have you got an online account? if you have you can pop your readings on there and get your up to date balance.
If not you can give your readings to me and I will do it all for you and make sure the Direct Debit it set correctly.
You shouldn't have been made to feel like that about the letter we sent, we would normally just send out a letter asking for your readings or give you a ring.
If I can help, just email me using the email address in my profile page, I just want to make sure all is correct for you

I wouldn't be surprised if we get a decent couple of weeks in October like we did last year. The weather during summer of 2011 followed a similar patern. Ironically I was watching a re-run on History channel last night of the Edwardian Farm and although this series was done about three or so years ago they had issues with harvesting their crops due to constant rain. It seems our weather has gone topsy turvey and the days of the long summer days is something that is cast to memory now.
I went ot bed last (hideous stinking cold that I currently have) with a mug of hot chocolate and a hot water bottle!! Never known this for me at the peak of summer!
Allot of our outside jobs are done now - thank fully. I just wonder what this winter will bring!!Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

This "summer" certainly helps us to focus on the winter preps. Am faffing with curtains, coal, stocks etc with some urgency.0

If anybody has a Screwfix near them, they have ice scrapers for 74p in their clearance section. You can order on line and arrange for branch collection. Have to make an order for work may add them on!A smile costs little but creates much0

They've filmed a Wartime Farm I believe, so hopefully that will be shown later this year. All the series have been absolutely fantastic!0 -
I know a lot of you say "put fleece behind your curtains", but my DG never seem draughty so I never use anything plus Ive got vertical blinds that I use of a night and never draw my curtains..............Haps im lucky not to have gaps in my window frames........
Ive bought some coal at summer prices, and ive got a real good load of logs/and wood ready, but we only light the open fire of a night because we have gas central heating, and I love to watch flames flickering up the chimney, better than watching tv.....:D...
Im well in credit with the gas and elec , so at least I wont be cold this winter................
My freezer is always full of everyday food , I stock up when its on speical offer.........................So although its only July im ready for the winter..........
For me, it's not so much drafts as the fact that the windows are colder than the walls & we do lose heat through them. The front door is a problem area, but that needs other solutions so I can open it!I have an integral garage, which has been converted to a room. It has sliding patio doors, laminate floor and plastered walls. It's used for storage ATM but the idea is it will be a play room / games room eventually.
Anyway, it isn't heated, although the boiler cupboard is in there. It's warm in summer, thanks to the glass doors, but very cold in winter.
It is the front of the house so I need a solution for these doors that isn't unsightly. I think strips of bubblewrap is going to look awful - they are quite big. Any suggestions? They currently just have vertical blinds. Would fleeces look bad? I won't need to open the doors, so don't mind them being blocked.
The room will just have the kids trampoline in over winter, so they'll want to get in for a bounce now and then...
Are they double glazed doors? If not, can you put some of the double glazing film onto help keep the cold out/warmth in? I don't find fleece looks bad at my windows, but you'd want to make sure you got matching fleeces for each door!
My hallway's not heated at all on the ground floor, & the draught proofing round the door is useless, so the hallway gets cold which of course then makes the rest of the house colder through diffusion. I've hung a light coloured fleece over the glass panes of the door, which made such a difference I've left it up permanently - I do tie it back with a strip of lace in the day at the moment, but it hangs down when its cold & at night. When I first had it up, I'd done a safety pinned casing for the net wire it hangs on - it does look better now I've sewn the casing... Then, over that, I've got cotton curtains that draw back in the day/when we're out because I can't easily open the door with them closed. I got them from a charity shop & stitched them together so they stay together when closed, & my plan is to line them when I find something affordable & big enough (possibly a super king size flannelette sheet when I've had them longer & get some new ones).
Thinking about the heat loss through diffusion, I 'd make sure the children know to keep the door to the play room shut when not in use... Actually, a curtain over that would probably be a good idea if you got it while getting some for the patio doors, so it matched.Hi all,
I have not yet managed to read all posts up to date as this thread is very long!
Anyway I just wanted to ask for some advice please, I'm relocating to a cottage in a semi rural location in 3 weeks and I wanted to know what prep I must do for Winter or what should I prioritise? thanks xx
I'd find out about heating/fuel first & if you need oil/solid fuel, get that sorted.
Then (I'm guessing you drive) think about car prep & what you would do if the roads were snowed up - will work be ok if you call in & ask to work from home/have you got anyone near where you work that you could stay with if you couldn't get back home.
Once you've moved in, you can start to identify where you'll want to add extra insulation, but if you're getting curtains etc for the cottage now, I'd look at thicker ones or those that you can easily add layers too.
I'd stock up on food etc as supplies may find it hard to get through, but you can do that once you're in & have worked out storage space.0
