in Water bills
I pay £14 per month for water and use very little so I hardly worry about my water bill. The other week I casually rang up to ask how much it was and her reply was that I needed to up my direct debit to £164 per month. I had used 34000 gallons and my bill was £699.80!
Huh? Anyway to cut a long story short I had a major leak which required replacement pipe through into the bathroom.
When I went online to check my past bills they had jumped from Anglian Water owing me £2.32 to £141. in less than three months. Why didn't they check such a large jump? Yes I should have I know but I was recovering from a heart attack so was otherwise occupied. But surely there are many people who are too ill to go on their hands and knees to read the meter and rely on the Water Companies to do their job.
I received a one off payment to cover the water loss and in the end they owed me £13.73 which apparently not all water companies do.
I find this very galling. You don't have this problem with the Electric companies when something goes wrong outside your property and out of your control so why with water?

You got your money back for a leak , sounds like a good outcome TBH
High consumption is flagged up when its read for a bill and would put it on hold until investigated , as you rang up this would not have triggered anything, i take it from your post that you rang in with a reading ?0 -

But you said the leak was in a pipe into your bathroom-so presumably it was on your property and therefore your responsibiiity. You are responsible for the supply pipe from the property boundary or meter, not from the external walls of the house. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Why would you casually ring up to ask how much the bill was ? ........ I assume because you realised that the bill was going to be high.0 -

Is it really? Not in Kent it isn't. I once got a bill for £5,000 due to an error when they changed the meter but they didn't query it at all. It took me months to sort out too with them assuring me it would be sorted and then sending reminder bills months later. It seems to me that it's all so computer based that a human doesn't get to query anything.
Yes round here high bills and are flagged up by the system and put on hold until released or investigated0 -
you had a leak of 34000 gallons in your bathroom and did not notice. HOW. did you not notice the fish swimming in there with the ducks.0
