Washing hair

Options
Hi!
I've just moved into a property that is veeeery old and the bathroom only has a bathtub. When we were shown around there was a showerhead attached to the taps, but were later told it doesn't work. We've gone out and bought a new pipe and showerhead and think there's something wrong with either the taps or the water pressure because the water isn't mixing.

Anyway... after that long background story... I have THICK long hair which is difficult enough to manage day to day as it is.

I was wondering how it is possible to wash hair in a bathtub with no rinsing facility. I also want a fairly economical method because I don't want to make our water bills too high.

I also shave my legs and bits and things. What do you girls do? How do you rinse? Do you use jugs and leave the taps running? Do you fill up the bath at all or just run the taps? Is using a sink better?
What did they do before shower heads were invented? How was hair rinsed?

I'm considering taking up a gym membership to be able to shower.

PS. Also, exfoliation. How to rinse this off completely in a bath with no showerhead?

As I understand it to get a shower head to work the cold water (header) tank needs to be at least 3 feet above the position of the actual shower head if you see what I mean. Doesn't matter where the hot tank is.

Pre showers we all used to wash our hair in the sink with a jug - but bear in mind there were also no conditioners then (came out in the late 60's to early 70's) so it was easier. Tented to get someone else to help.

In truth it might be easier to join the gym, if you cost the hot water for extra baths it might not even cost too much extra and you will be fitter:D

(I used to be a gym member and just about had all my showers there, miss the water saving, and they provided shower gel and shampoo/conditioner as well)
  • Hi, I used to live in a flat with just a bath. I used to lay back in the bath, submerging my head, then sit up to work in the shampoo. Then submerge again and swish hair around to rinse off. Finally, fill a plastic jug of cool water from the tap and pour over your hair for a final rinse. Make sure you wash your hair first, before you introduce any soap/ bubble bath/ smellies etc into the water, or it'll leave your hair looking lank.

Alternatively you can just lean forward over the bath and wash your hair with jugs of water, or buy one of those cheapy rubber hose mixer things with a shower head at the end that fits over the taps.

As for leg shaving, just do it in the bath, resting your foot up on the side. Does mean you have a hairy tide mark afterwards that you have to clean after tho'!

Exfoliation: use a loofah or shower buff scrunchie instead of a body scrub? HTH

  • I vote for the jug as well. That's how I used to do it at boarding school. I never had a problem, except for the time I put bubble bath in the water...

Get someone to help with it....we have no shower and 3 of us all have long thick hair we lie down in bath to wet it first then shampoo and someone (usually me mumsy! lol) rinses their hair then they condition and I step in and rinse again it's not too bad as it's only once a week, in between they use Baptiste dry shampoo so do I it's brilliant for freshening hair up. Course you could wash it over the sink downstairs in the kitch and then PRAPS you could use a shampoo spray.

A cold final rinse will close the cuticle on your hair making it lovely and shiny. Also if you add a tablespoon of vinegar to your cool water it will act as a rinse aid hopefully making it more efficient.

You could also consider wetting your hair in the bath, covering your length with conditioner then shampooing your scalp, then rinsing. It would certainly cut down on the amount of water needed to rinse whilst protecting your delicate ends from the harshness of the shampoo.

Or how about cutting out the conventional conditioners and just using a leave in? I have longish hair and my leave in conditioner is the most important product to keep it looking healthy.

Leg shaving I use an epilator - yes a little painful but I can't stand shaving in the bath or shower and I only have to epilate once a month.
  • glass jug of water was what we used cheap as chips .No showers in my life until the early 1970s .when i was little it was the tin bath from the back of the coal cellar door and as I was the youngest I was tail-end-charlie in the bath after my two mucky brothers .Scoured with a flannel by Mum and washed with a bar of Lifebouy soap was how we were kept clean for most of our growing up.My Mum also used to grate green fairy soap into a jam jar add a bit of water and that was the shampoo.I hated having my hair washed as I had long hair and didn't have it cut until I was about 8
Two long thick plaits for school and washed every Saturday afternoon for Church and Sunday school next day It used to take most of Saturday afternoon to get dried and detangled. My Dad used to sit and comb the tangles out and woe betide me if I wriggled or complained, I would get a sharp rap on the top of my head and told to sit still. To this day I don't like my hair being combed and its over 60 years ago now

    Hi aintshesweet,

I don't like to wash my hair in the bath so in your position I would go for the jug and sink option after the bath.

I would highly recommend a gym membership. Mine has just expired and this morning I washed my hair in my own shower for the first time in 2 months - felt oddly unfamiliar!

in fact there is a recent thread on just this there.

You can still get those rubber attaching shower heads for bath taps....we have one, tbh though I really dislike it so I use a jug....I don't leave the taps running I lean forward and turn them on and off each time. I do the first rinse in my bathwater though...presuming I've not been too grubby and I don't have any thing scented/soapy in the bath at that stage.

I tend to get in, do hair, leave conditioner in, (which I rinse by jug) wash my self, shave legs, rinse hair with jug, in that sort of order. :)

I have really long hair too, but not very thick.
