Advice for choosing a breast pump please

:) Hey all,

I am due in December and was after some honest reviews on breastpumps. I did order a tommee tippee one as that is the bottles that i have however after reading some reviews it seems that they can be fiddly to take apart clean etc.

someone said that the Medela Swing Breast Pump is a good one.

i plan to breastfeed but will need to express for uni once a week and my partner wants to feed the baby so i guess i will need to express a bit.

Can anyone share thier experiances etc? I would prefer and electric one

Thanks for your time:)

I have the free Nuby one. DH had to err, give me a demonstration on how it works. Will let you know if it's any good!

Think it's the Tommee Tippee electric one is 49.99 in Mothercare's sale at the moment- I know they've manual ones for £25 as well.
  • ive got the medela swing electric pump and also the nuby manual one that i got free. havent attempted to use any yet so will be watching with interest.

I was looking at these this morning on youtube, there are videos on here with full instructions and demonstrations and how to operate, clean and maintain. Take a look x
    I'm not a "SINGLE" mum, I'm a "DOUBLE" mum!:D
  • I'm back at work PT so have to express for my husband to feed the baby in the mornings.

I've been using the Tommy Tippee one and think its great! However, it did take me a couple of days to get used to building it up after sterilising however its not difficult.

  • You can rent one from NCT to see if you like it, then buy one if you do.

I got the manual Nuby one free as well and swore by it in the early days, as the Medela electric one SIL gave me was too strong for me at that point. I'm now totally using the Medela and have no problems with it. I use Tommy Tippee bottles though.
  • sorry if this is telling you something you already know, but if you're planning on pumping then try to make sure breastfeeding is properly established first (4-6 weeks at least) otherwise it can affect your supply, and cause confusion for the baby. Personally, I'd say if you've already got the tommy tippee one, I'd wait and see how you get on with that, to save buying another one if it's not needed. My SIL used the medela swing electric one and she got on well with it, but you won't really know until you give it a go. I've only used the manual medela and that was fine for me 'cos I hardly needed it. Both my babies were offended by every bottle I offered and refused to feed unless from the real thing! :)

not wanting to cause arguments, but I really really disagree with the 4-6 weeks thing (and I know that is the recommended time to establish breastfeeding) Everyone, and I do mean everyone that I know who solely breastfed their baby for the first 6 weeks could then never get them to take anything other than breast. On the other hand others (myself included) who occassionally gave a bottle (only 1 in every 7 or 8 feeds say) from very early on, had no problems with supply or baby confusion. I think the key is to make sure that the bottle is the exception rather than the rule, and that if a bottle is being given, mum should express, to maintain supply.

also to add, I had the medela mini electric and it was awesome. Had a manual for my first and frankly would have been faster going to guernsey to milk a cow than it was getting any milk out of me with that thing!
