Not sure if anyone can help but I'm giving it a go anyway...

My friend is going to Australia for a year. She wants to get a Blackberry so she can use the BBM to message back to the UK for free.

Do they do a Pay As You Go Blackberry like we have here? Will a UK Blackberry that's unlocked work out there?

Any ideas of what the best way to do this would be?

BBM is data intensive, so whilst they are not charged in the same way as SMS, they are most certainly NOT free - you need to pay for the data overheads. That said, any other phone with email access also provides 'free' commincations. Yes, PAYG Blackberries are available in Oz, complete with the required data bolt-on which will need to be topped up. As for taking an unlocked one over, that would work too, but the caveat is you'd need to select a pre-pay tariff that allowed for BBM data access and not all networks support this.

BBM is avail on Vodafone owned reseller Crazy Johns, £29 dollar sim pack which gives 6 months BB services.


You then choose whatever prepaid crazy john plan you want, if you take a BB you MUST call the network last used on for BB and have BB taken off ALL networks BB database via its BB PIN - if you dont the new network cannot process the BB services on the handset even if you paid for them & lengthy calls back to UK sometimes aint cheap or available (0845/0870 are not always recognised as its up to the forgien carrier if they will process/charge structure these !)
