PlusNet Cessation Charge

  • Yes ashleypride I agree I have had this discussion with Plusnet and they have shown me the checks that they undertake to make sure online sign up customers have viewed and accepted the terms and conditions. I assure you though that telephone sign up customers dont get this facility, rather the operator accepts the terms and conditions on your behalf. I myself was surprised when they actually put this in black and white for me. I do intend to exhaust their complaints procedure before taking it to arbitration process so will let you all know howI get on in due course.

But I fail to see how this end of contract charge can be transparent.

Imagine if all companies started throwing in charges for things and just saying its all there on our website for you to see.

It is not an end of contract charge, if you end your contract by changing ISP using a MAC there is no charge, it is a charge levied by BT to disconnect their equipment at the exchange, someone has to pay for the engineers time.

Most ISP's pass this charge on to the customer, ones that do not tend to charge a higher monthly subscription and can absorb the cost. Plusnet offer cheap broadband consequently the charge is passed on to the customer if the broadband and line connection is ceased.
  • I understand this and do not contest the purpose of the charge but it is still not transparent

deklan99 - would you be so kind as to advise which document the below came from please???....

Ofcom View "we confirm in the final guidance our view that such terms are likely to be fair where they are transparent to consumers at the point of sale and reflect only direct costs associated with ceasing service."

http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/consultations/addcharges/?a=0 , bottom of page pdf "Statement: Ofcom's Review of Additional Charges" Full print version - Updated 05|03|10 Section 10 Cease Charges

Also same page Ofcom Statement of Additional Charges (updated guidance) pdf as at 11/11/10 "As a matter of best practice, Ofcom also considers is it important that CPs make it very clear to consumers the level of any cease charge not only at the point of sale but also at the point at which the consumer is considering terminating their contract."
