From my time working at an electrical retailer (many years ago) it was actually better for me (as a salesman) and the store that you walked away and not bought anything than bought the camera without any accessories. Its weird but thats the way the commission and the sales targets were structured as the store didn't make any money from the actual camera. I'd presume the situation is similar here.

Also to be fair to him he isn't going to say you can use a phone charger with the camera even if you can and he didn't want to sell you one, if something were to go wrong it would all come back to him and the store.

In the past, they used to make a large part of their money from selling film and processing as well as accessories, lenses etc. Now, if somebody buys a digital point and shoot camera, they don't actually need anything else other than a memory card (which they can probably get cheaper elsewhere). Extended warranties are another way of maintaining income. I don't think camera shops in general are doing very well these days. A local chain in the North West recently went bust after being in business for 50+ years.
