PC Speakers..can I just plug them into the headset socket on my Toshiba SL738BHD TV?

Monkey,
The red and white sockets are inputs, not outputs, so you use those if you want to send sound into the telly to be heard on the telly's speakers.
They are often used - with the video input - for games consoles.0 -

'The phono sockets alongside the COMPONENT VIDEO INPUT sockets will accept L and R audiosignals.'
You require audio output sockets for the purpose you are talking about. The input socket is for connecting other equipment to play back through your tv.
You may find an output socket (possibly a single 3.5 m socket) elsewhere on the set. To use this you then need an external amplifier of some sorts (a mini hifi system would do) to get any sound out. This is basically the same process as using some pc speakers (preferably with a sub woofer/bass unit to get some decent sound).
I don't think a usb connected set would disconnect your tv speaker (and may not even be intended for sound).
If possible, just plug a pair of headphones into the tv headphone socket and see if the tv speakers are disconnected. If yes, then try out some pc speakers, but get some with a bass unit that can sit on the floor near the tv in order to get some decent sound.0 -
Have you got a link for the online manual
Have you looked on the back for standard speaker connectors the same as hi fi stereo units0 -
This spec sheet for the TV may not be comprehensive, but there doesn't look to be a lot in the way of 'audio out'.

I see it has 10 watts and its own subwoofer, sounds good on paper, but not to the ears, as the OP has found.0 -
Santer....here http://www.toshiba-om.net/LCD/lcd_chooser.php?country=United Kingdom&language=English SL is series, model no . sl738, screen size 42. Thanks again for your help!0

I would try
Headphones
Digital Audio, though you will need a cable for that Page 9
Possibly the PC HDMI 1 is input and output Page 9
Have a check for the nearest dealer here and ask them, they should also be able to help with any leads you need

Another option is to get a surround speaker set which will connect to a DVD - Video and may connect to - Freeeview - Skybox0 -
Hi Santer-cheers for all your help-really appreciated!!!Plugged my really cheap & crap (!) tiny pc speakers into headphone jack-although the speakers are extra extra cheap & nasty-the improvement in the quality was FAB-you can actually here clearly what people are sayin without turning TV up. Remote works as well for volume.
So...to clarify........
1)-If I buy bog standard speakers that sit on floor-need to also have an amp purchased separately?
2)-To quote you 'Digital Audio, though you will need a cable for that Page 9
Possibly the PC HDMI 1 is input and output Page 9'.....would these cables just slot into speakers? What type of thing would I need to buy to go with the PC HDMI or Digital Audio?
3)-If I stick with PC speakers....would the signal still be stereo?

If you have a mo...could you reccomend me one of these under £40? Mainly TV /DVD (poss blu-ray soon) & occaisional CD. As I said as long as it's a big improvement on tv speakers quite happy. Not a huge ammt of room for surround sound (!)
5)-PC speakers permanently plugged into TV won't harm TV??
THANK YOU again for your help!0 -
Of the £40 ones, probably the ones you like the look of the most, and are 2.1 which you will need a spare plug socket for
The reviews for this are good

Also for this

Though still worth asking a toshiba dealer about all the possibilities
The speakers will be OK connected to the TV, probably better as you won't damage the connections by frequently plugging them in and out, though you could switch the subwoofer off when you are not using them
You could check if amazon have reviews for those0 -
I think I've made my mind up...........will be one of the 2 santer roccomends...but will also call Toshiba too. Just wnat it quick & easy.
Last question....promise (!). If I buy a blu-ray player & have the PC Speakers plugged into headphone socket-do I just leave it as it is or do I need to plug the speakers into the blu ray unit?0 -
The sound will be coming from the socket whatever you play through the TV? So they can stay where they are0
