Hi
A short back ground.
Started worked as a self employed market stall owner back in April of this year (after taking early retirement and feeling that I wasn't ready for the scrap heap just yet), kept all receipts as required. You can probably see what is coming.............I have just returned from a short break with the OH and arranged for my daughter to stay and support our 16 year old who had just started 6th form. Our daughter thought that she would be helpful by doing a decided few chores around the house; one was the shredding of some old papers.....however I believe that she may have shredded quite a few of the business receipts along the way as the box that they were in is now empty!!! We do have a few as we had recently started to file these differently.
I know that I will need to speak with the tax people about this ASAP but any advice/comments before I do would be gratefully received.
Not a very good start!
Thanks in advance

Have you kept digital copies? Put the expenses/income on a spreadsheet (paper or digital)?Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -
Yes I keep records of all income and expenditures on a spread sheet.0

You should be ok then, it's unusual for the HMRC to want to see the originals. Although they do sometimes and you are required to keep them for 7 years, so don't get blase about it.
I'm speechless about what your daughter did. That's no 'innocent mistake'. Next time leave the 16 year old on her own as your daughter has a problem.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0
