I think i would prefer to pay the extra for the keyboard for taking notes etc - but that's an excellent price for Christmas presents to be honest, smart move from Amazon!

  • just scroll down and look at the features.... its nothing too exciting.. just smaller and cheaper imo...

should have just bought a refurbished one at discount a while back

I would pay the extra for the keyboard (the version I have). I use my kindle for notes and I like being able to search both books and store easily. But it is a very good price

I don't know when it's being released here, but Amazon has also announced the Kindle Fire, a $199 Andriod-based 7-inch tablet.

Do you mean the one priced $79?

The UK market isn't getting a model subsidised by advertising like the US is, therefore your price comparison is inaccurate.

The non-subsidised model is selling at $109 without state sales taxes, which is £70.32 (at $1.55 : £1). The product attracts VAT of £14.06 (20% rate) coming to a total of £84.38 not taking into account any additional operating costs Amazon incur.

I've seen an article about the new Kindle Fire. I am hoping to get a Kindle for Xmas - was just looking at the wifi one with keyboard. However, my dad is going to the USA in January, do you think it would be worth asking him to buy me the Fire there instead?

I'm not very tech savvy with Kindles, would the Fire work here even if not released here? I couldn't see why not but I might be missing something.

Thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated.

I was hoping for an update to the larger Kindle DX, would of liked a cheaper version without the 3G

If reading isn't your primary use then I'd go for the colour, lcd is not good for reading long periods, this is where e-ink wins but you don't get the bells and whistles
  • Bought a Kindle, love it, but seems that the new one with the keyboard is only cheaper by £2.00! I can't imagine carrying it around in my back pocket, already terrified of sitting on my phone. Also, although I have small hands I think the smaller version would not feel as easy to balance, with a silicone case it feels more comfortable to grip As a real bookworm I was skeptical, but it is very easy on the eye, even for someone like me who reads for a couple of hours at a time. If the book is good I finish it in one sitting!
Must admit I don't like the password system, showing the last key inputted instead of the usual "*" makes it easier for anyone to learn the password. Anyway to alter this? The Kindle Fire looks interesting, but not sure I could justify one, have a netbook and a Kindle, and wonder if it would be technology for its own sake.
I also keep the WiFi off unless downloading and so far the battery life is just great, haven't had to charge since I got it! I was stunned how fast it downloads, even when we are in a poor area for internet speed, namely a Scottish village.
I also love the breakdown of American cost compared to ours, won't feel so hard done to in future!
  • I bought my Kindle a couple of months ago after getting the MSE newsletter showing the warehouse deals for £79.99. I love it, still getting used to it and haven't worked out how to organise/number series of books yet, but no problems. Although it states "refurbished" on the warehousedeals page, you wouldn't know it - all packaged as brand new.

Also got a leather cover for a fiver on ebay - fits perfectly...not paying £30 for one lol

The new kindle without keyboard looks nice, but even if it had been available when I bought mine I'd still have gone for a keyboard version.

Now if only they came in colour....
