Holiday, Vodaphone blackberry, roaming help!

I have a blackberry on Vodafone and am due to go away next Weds. What I ned to know is:

1) If I switch off all the roaming with the Blackberry, will I be ok in avoiding the extortionate charges (and can I be really certain they are all off!)

2) Can i use my sim (which obviously has the Blackberry contract on) in a non-blackberry phone, will this still incur roaming charges?

3) Would I be better using a cheap phone and a spare sim?

Not really up on roaming charges etc, just don't want to be caught out and have a massive phone bill lumped on what was a free holiday!!

Thanks

I think you'll be OK, but what's the point in taking it then? Do you mean data roaming?

Again, if you use the sim abroad with any phone you will incur roaming charges for everything except incoming texts. Do you mean avoiding data roaming charges only?

Thanks, it is the data roaming charges I want to avoid (after watching Watchdog!)

I will want to send an odd text to my son to make sure he has fed the cat and the goldfish! But no calls or internet or Facebook or emails.

Just very paranoid about huge bills after Watchdog scared me to death

I don't know much about BBs, but I think switching off data roaming will do the job then.
If if you have a spare basic unlocked handset you can use it with the BB sim card instead.
  • Go options > Networks and connections > Mobile network > Data Services while roaming, select off.

However I would check with Vodafone if they do anything like O2's Blackberry abroad bolt on/package. Blackberrys aren't as data hungry as some smart phones.

Vodafone do have a package for £10 per month or £2 per day if just a short trip within Europe.. I think that it gives you 25MB per day. But if you really like your BB, but would be too scared to use it abroad, then another option would be to get a Prepaid Vodafone BB SIM just for the holiday. Found here, they start from £15.50 and come with a domestic bundle. Then you can Opt in to Vodafone Passport and the £2 daily data bundle(£5 outside Europe). Here

Just an option. Not free, but at least worry free.
  • There is some bad advice given by people

I have said many times dont just disable data roaming, disable the
    entire data service....

Give anyone who may need to contact you in this serious emergency you are planning on having your holiday reps number and leave the damn thing at home.
