just want to make sure I've covered all the bases!

Hi there, I hope some of you lovely people will be able to look over this and see if I've missed anything.

My husband and I took his daughter (my step-daughter) in last week as she was escaping from a violent relationship.
Whilst we are happy for her to stay with us for the moment we live in a 1 bedroomed bungalow so she's on the sofa at the moment so not ideal but 100% better than where she was!!
We were not aware of any of this going on, we knew she was a bit down and tried to help where we could.

So far we have got her JSA moved over to our area, notified her old landlord of the rental termination, stopped her HB for the old place.
We have also got her registered at our Doctors, she has a few medical conditions going on but her ex would not let go to the Doctors. We've got her on the housing list for our area and filled the bond forms incase she needs to rent privately (we are skint so can't afford to pay her deposit+bond)

Can anyone else think of anything we've missed? My brain is all over the place at the mo. Poor thing is looking a bit brighter today, after some good talks and nice hot meals (she has been living on packet noodles!)

Can anyone else think of anything?
Thanks

Did your daughter have any utility bills in her name at her old address - gas, water, electric, landline phone, council tax, household insurance, satellite/cable TV etc etc? All these need to be informed if she's changed address.

May also be an idea to change bank details, given the sounds of her situation it wouldn't be uncommon if he was using her for financial stuff too.
Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.
  • Have you cancelled her utility bills? and redirected her post? did they have a shared bank account?

    What a lovely step mum!
  • They didn'y have a joint account, but I didn't think of informing the utility bills.....she also has a dodgy Landlord who I found out over the weekend has a key to all the flats!!!! So cancelling them would be a good idea. Thanks, I knew I'd miss something!

    utilities, banks, credit card, insurance,

why not get a credit report to make sure you know her financial position and can double check to find out if there has been any loans etc taken out in her name.

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

She's not had dentist since she moved....we've got her in at the doctors. She doesn't drive and only has a savings account with no chip and pin so I'm not overly worried about that.
Utilities wise, she was on a card meter so has nothing outstanding and it had run out on the day that she came back with us.

Thankyou for all your replies, it has really helped. If I can ask you another question?
The Landlord doesn't live in the block of flats but his daughter does and she has a key to all the flats and we found out she had been into the flat without my stepdaughters permission. I take it the same rules apply with flats that the L.L has to give 24 hours notice before coming into the flat?
I just want to know where we stand as the place sounds really dodgy, the daughter uses her own flat as a doss house, and there are regular fights/police involement/drug use.....I'm just hoping the daughter doen't start messing us about.
  • It's great that you are helping your step daughter out of this mess, but a next step should be to help her to take control of her own financial / pracitcal matters. You say We have done xyz for her, which I guess she needed right now, but if she is to move on, she will need to learn to stand on her own two feet.

For your own sakes, I would make sure that she can get her own place as soon as possible. It's great that you're helping her out but you don't want your lives totally disrupted if she carries on a wild life style.
