Frankly Mozilla needs to change the way FF updates if they are going for more frequent releases because I really can't be bothered to update any more. (spelling corrected)

Huh? I believe that Firefox updates itself by default, if not then:
    1. Tools > Options > Advanced > updates
    2. Under Automatically check for updates to
Tick the three check boxes Firefox, Add-ons and Search engines.
    3. Under When updates to firefox are found
Select the Automatically download and install the update radio button and tick the Warn me if this will disable any of my add-ons check box.
    4. Firefox will now update automatically.
    Easy peasy

I updated to 7.0 last night, but it hasn't solved my problem of FF grabbing 100% of the CPU for up to 30secs every now and again.

I too am thinking of reverting to 3.6 to see if it helps - I've just checked Options/Advanced/Update History and the last 3.6 version I had was 3.6.17

I would probably try another browser if I didn't like some of FF's features - such as the easy deletion of selected cookies which can get you out of some situations when a site just refuses to forget some previously entered data.

It has never updated a major version for me; 4 never auto updated to 5 and 5 never updated to 6 and 6 now claims its up to date, dispite all those options being ticked (they are on by default).

Which means I have to manually download the new version every 6 weeks and prey the plugin vendors update as well.

Finally got used to Opera. We'll see how the new FF performs, for me Opera had its drawbacks, although speedy; I multi-task always, so perhaps FF was always the better option, as sometimes (perhaps my security settings?) Opera wouldn't perform as well as it should. Will download and try the new version, as always liked previously, just the speed issue.

    Ouch!
I suppose your best plan is to closely monitor this forum because there will always be somebody complaining about/ praising each new release. :-)

As an aside I've just discovered in FF that you can highlight a URL that isn't a hyperlink, right click and open in new window/tab without cutting and pasting into the address bar.
I don't know when it was introduced.

I've been using that feature for quite a while, so it's not new to 7
