credit check to get contract phone.HELP

Hi
I have had my phone for a loong time on pay as you go. I liked it because I can control the cost and also got a landline. Lately my phone is been playing up ,so I thought it s good time to get a new phone -on a contract.
There are good deal out there, but I don t want to be in a 24 contract.
Long stoy short I just failed the credit check with t mobile .They are only offering my a sim contract (a contract without a new phone):mad:
I don t understand how I can get a credit card and not accept to get a montly contract phone?I belive that I ve got a fair/good credit score
I ve been with t mobile for 5years!!
Any of you had the same problem . Pay as you go trying to go on contract?
Is it any good if I check with O2 or vodafone?

I have bad credit which is improving but still isn't perfect. O2 passed me in 2008 when my credit file was a lot worse than it is now and passed me for multiple accounts over the last 3 years. 3 started to pass me this year and are generally considered easy to pass with (but only started passing me in January this year).

When you applied for the t-mobile did they process it as a new connection? I know they used to factor in pay as you go history if you applied to upgrade that to a regular contract which may help your cause if they didn't do that the 1st time. You could accept the sim only too and generally after 3-6 months of clear billing they will consider an upgrade without needing a further credit check.

You mention you don't want to be in a 24 month contract. In this day and age sadly it is very hard to find deals that aren't on a 24 month contract. 18 month contracts do exist but generally either the line rental is more or there is an upfront cost for the phone. Worth mentioning that O2 do 12 month contracts as upgrades for existing pay monthly customers. Typically the phone costs more up front AND the line rental is more expensive than 24 months but may be worth looking at if you want shorter commitment in the future. O2 also offer 18 month contracts for £5 a month more than 24 month equivalents

Chances are the same thing will happen with O2 as well (I worked Telesales for O2 for a while, hated it) processing orders & people with good credit ratings got refused.Problem for you is that your refusal will go on your credit report & will affect any decision by other companies.
When you have the bank details, were the card details matching the billing address & did your bank have at least £3 in it as these affect the outcome.

I don t know if that is of any help ,but before contacting t mobile about switching from pay as u go to contract phone, I made sure that there enough money in the bank.
I have always make sure to be on the electoral list, pay my bills on time and have a full time job. I don t understand how they do their check: if on one hand I pass the check to get a credit card, but on the other hand, the mobile phone provider- I have been with for 5 years cannot offer me a contract phone?!?
I was not looking into getting on 24month contract more a 18 month as 12month a pretty rare now.
I'll check with 02 if the 'll pass me .

    .

It is illogical. Its not based on your being with a company or even paying loads to the company over the years, its to do with whatever financial check score system they use, not loyalty sadly. You could try finding out how they check (eg if they use Equifax or somewhere you can gain a free trial for) and double check all the details are correct. I had to do this with Virgin when they used Equifax who had me down as bankcrupt when I was not!

Be interested to see how you get on with 02, I was thinking about joining them laster this year/next year (anything but not 3!) Been accepted for Virgin Media (I turned them down though) but failed a transfer balance credit card after this so I have no idea where I stand! I also know checking via refusal would affect my chances of being accepted elsewhere.

Hi, how many other credit accounts do you have? - It seems to be that the more accounts you have that have been well managed the more the chance of getting your mobile contract.

You mention you have a credit card , if you always pay it in full that appears to go against you , also if you don't pay it in full have you ever had a missed or late payment?

Your credit file not only shows your individual credit accounts but also lists the status of all the payments, how much you paid, whether were missed payments etc.

Everybody seems to dismiss Three because of how bad they used to be , however they do appear to be about the easiest to get a contract with and I can honestly say that ,in my area, they have the best signal giving full signal strength at all times. ( I also have contracts with Vodafone and T-mobile whose signal strength varies between a third and two thirds. ).

Sorry for going off on a tangent !!

    This makes no difference.

Credit Rating How it works and how to improve it

Companies use different CRAs and use different scoring systems. Small errors and small discrepancies can make a big difference.
I'll check with 02 if the 'll pass me .
Every application (credit search) gets listed in your credit file(s) and adversely affects your credit score for a few months. Before trying your luck with o2 you may want to try contacting t-mobile and finding out what went wrong with your application. Find out what CRA they use, get a copy of your file and send them a letter with the copy enclosed.
  • thank for all your advice. I don t want to many credit check to show on my file. I'll check with t mobile , ie ask for feed back and also if refusing their sim only package will go against me.
I only have one credit card which I'm paying off(not using it on purchases yet..)I have never missed a payment on my card or paid any bill late. anyway I t s frustating.

their sim only plans aint bad, orange is an easy to get contract
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
