Holiday ideas wanted

I am looking for holiday ideas for the summer please. For a family of 5 (oldest is 12 so may have to pay full price) with a budget of £3000 (or less).i can take up to 3 weeks off work.
We were originally looking at Australia or the USA but christmas spending has killed all hope of that for this year at least.
We don't like organised tours or staying in 'blackpool in the sun' type resorts. We like finding out about the country we are visiting and particuarly the food and history. We would like somethign with something interesting to see and do, generally quite happy to drive abroad but also want some time by the pool to relax.
A couple of years ago we did Egypt and had a great time and of course our money went a long way.
So can anyone suggest anthing based on that please.

We are going to the Amalfi Coast in May. Amalfi appealed to us because of the weather, food visiting Pompeii, Vesuvious, naples, Capri and the walking It is through Exodus.co.uk as a walking tour, but they offer lots of other types of family and activity holidays. IN the past when we have done an Exodus holiday we have done a group walk in the morning and then gone our own way in the afternoon, and visited local towns.
Thats how we discovered Lac Annecy in France and we are going back there for a third time in the summer with the kids (camping holiday), Last year we did loads of activities including paragliding, scuba diving, forest adventures, horse rising. The kids are 10 and 14 and are looking forward to going again0 -
Isla Canela is a very new resort to the British market and is still very much traditional. Its on the boarder of Spain and Portugal and is on the Atlantic Coast. So even though you have the heat of Southern Spain there is always a breeze from the sea.
Isla Canela is the beach resort of an old Spanish town called Ayamonte. I have just got back and had a great time just plodding around and drinking coffee.
The beach is 7km long and is great for kids. As the resort is on the boarder with Portugal you can explore two coast lines of the Costa de la Luz and the Algarve.
Most of the apartments are new and a high spec. There are communal pool and all are within a stones throw of the beach.
Hope that helps and add some ideas to the pot.

how about camping in the uk. kids will love it and we have as richer heritage than anywhere abroad and your doing your bit for the enviroment all in one go.0

You're quite right the kids love camping - we try and get a way for a few weekends every year - but our holiday is the thing we look forward to each year and we really enjoy going abroad.
I am quite happy to travel long haul if i wont' need as much spends when i get there - i wondered about Thailand or Malaysia.0 -
hi MDUK.
last year we took my 13 year old son to margarita, which is an island off the coast of venezuela, and while we were there, we did a 2 day trip into the Orinoco delta and the rainforests, staying overnight in the jungle in log cabins, only accessible by boat. we did pirahna fishing, kayaking, crocodile hunting, visited several indian reservations, all totally unspoilt, not a cafe or ice cream van, or bit of rubbish to spoil the "back to nature" feel of the environment we were in. day 2 saw us flying over angel falls, it was mind blowing, my son really really loved it.
cost for 3 of us for 2 weeks all inc on the island was £2000, and the island is beautiful too, lots of parrots and pelicans, and mangroves to visit on boats etc, although can be commercialsed if you look for it. we paid an extra about £230 each for the 2 day trip, but that was part of the holiday "spends" as we were all inc, didnt spend much else!
very, very worth it.
its in the first choice brocure, but if you google it, first choise also have a cheaper company under their banner thats worth looking at. we stayed in bungalows in the grounds of the hotel too, and each group of about 10 bungalows had its own pool, so that was nice for chilling away from the main pool.
pm me if you need further infoTheoretically there is a perfect possibility of happiness: believing in the indestructible element in oneself and not striving towards it0 -
What about a villa/gite/cottage - with pool??
I am currently investigating the Dordogne region of france and that looks lovely.0 -
What about a cruise ? My folks cruise all the time and they had a brilliant time doing the med inc Pompei (sp)
Royal Carribbean are very good.Just owe Dad £2500 for a new car

Paid off car loan 22nd August 2009. :T0 -
i wouldn't have a problem with a villa and pool - self catering will keep the cost down and the kids will love the pool - but would need to have somewhere of interest nearby otherwise i would go stir crazy. I would like to go further afiled than france.
I fancy a cruise but my wife doesn't so not this time ( would love to see pompei though)
Keep 'em coming....0 -

St Lucia was beautiful and good for watersports but not sure re the cost. We much preferred it to the Seychelles (honeymoon).0
