Never let a Trader do this - we did once when we part exchanged our first car years ago. One day the old bill came round because the car had been involved in an incident and it was still down as our car - local Trader was pretty dodgy I think!
Always send off the details yourself to the DVLA.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
CLICK at the top or bottom of any page where it says:

Yep lesson well and truely learned, was not something I normally do but the trader is/was a friend. I always get a bill of sale signed as well, with new owner details, sold as seen etc. Just didn't this one occasion Grrr0

And take copies, use Recorded Delivery and chase them for confirmation - hassle now is better than serious hassle later, possibly from the police!
It may not be related directly to V5 details, but I think Watchdog are doing a report on the DVLA again this week (29 Sep).
@JDale - contact the DVLA asap and give the trail, you sold to the trader who has informed you of the new owner's details.0 -

Permission and a valid contract aren't always the same thing :-)
By the way, if you were to inform both Crown Estates and UKCPS that you don't own the car and they continue to harass you, you would be quite in your rights to pursue them both for damages.0
