So you waited for the police to arrive, who prized the fake front off the money plot to reveal the trapped money? They then took all the pile of trapped money AND your receipt? Are you sure they were the REAL police? Maybe they were actually the fraudsers, who, realising they'd been rumbled quickly dressed in police gear, gave it half an hour and turned up to "rescue" you and take all the money away as evidence, totally unsuspected by everyone. And you just let them walk away with all the money!! The REAL police were probably held up round the corner by a diversionary tactic car crash or something.

Have I been watching too much 'Oceans 11' again? I'll get me coat....

Are you sure the Police weren't the guys from 'The Real Hustle' in disguise??

It amazes me how many people, whether at cash machines or supermarkets are so careless with their pin number.

Many a time i could if i so minded had mugged so many people after leaving the supermarket who had been in front of me and I have seen their pin number.

And at ATMs, ALWAYS cover your 'pin hand' with your other hand or purse. Some of these machines are fitted with cameras and are set to keep your card (like the cash in the 1st post) then they have your card and your pin number.
Well noted..but reading the OP's post, it has nothing to do with being careless with one's PIN but about a crafty way by fraudsters to retain people's money after it has been dispensed by an ATM.

Personally, i would just walk away from the machine and call my bank to let them know i hadn't got the cash. I would also let them know of my suspicions, there is no way on earth i would hang about waiting for the Police to show up, it could be days ! If the fraudsters were nearby, which they probably were, i wouldn't imagine they'd politely ask you to step aside whilst they collected their cash.

Well if you got a receipt to say the cash has been dispensed, how would you be able to claim otherwise?

Good on the op for taking the time to prevent others falling victim to this crime. I wish there were more people like him out there:T

    Good on the OP!
I once noticed a couple of guys loitering near an external supermarket ATM. Indeed they looked so obviously shady they probably weren't!
Every so often one of them would go to the ATM and seem to be scrutinising it. I alerted the store security guard but didn't hang around to see the outcome
There was another instance where a garage ATM kept hold of my card. I alerted the garage (not interested) rung the telephone number displayed on the screen and also cancelled the card. Never used a garage ATM since but I suppose it could happen anywhere.

You call your bank and say " i requested xxxx from an ATM but it wasn't dispensed" Tell them about the device on the machine and they will refund you. This happens to someone, somewhere every single day, unfortunately, it's a common occurrence.

If you had your account number, date and time, the bank could check and would notice the money slot fault (all such faults are logged). Obviously further investigation would be needed (perhaps even including an engineer), but that is good grounds that your not trying to pull a fast one.

Saying that, every machine I have used in the past year only gives you a receipt after it has given to you both your card and cash. Must admit, I don't know if the receipt would be different if it couldn't give you the cash.

Hmmm, I don't normally request a receipt, perhaps I should.
  • A wee update......turns out that my bank refunded me the money 3 days after the incident, though I only discovered that today.

I guess they (the bank) will now reclaim the cash from the police. No news regarding the investigation.
