Surely there would have to be some kind of investigation first and the OP would have to wait for this to be completed thus out of pocket whilst it is investigated otherwise people would just claim that they took out £500 but the machine failed to deliver it.
Where i work, under PSD (payment services directive) regulations we would refund the customer upfront whilst the investigation is carried out. As far as i'm aware these regulations apply to all banks. In cases of ATM fraud where a device or scam is concerned, the customer is always refunded in full. If a customer should "try it on" (i've seen a few:rotfl:) we would still refund then redebit once we've investigated the alleged incident. Banks can't afford to be seen to question their customers integrity before an investigation is carried out which is why we always refund first.0 -
The money was retrieved by the police, though I don't have it back yet.
Neither the police or my bank are clear about whom I should get it back from, though I expect that to be sorted out shortly. The police also retained my receipt slip.''apply within''0 -
what would you have done if the fraudsters had turned up before the police did ?
As I said in my opening post.....there were some other things that happened which I haven't gone into because of the police investigation.
I'm only suggesting that people call the police if they experience this kind of fraud and do as advised.''apply within''0 -

!!!!!!??? That is absolutely shocking!
I know what I would do in this situation, I would retrieve my cash and then I would call the bank/police to report what had happened!
This is actually quite an old scam though, I thought that the banks had sorted it so that this could not happen any more. Maybe they did but the con artists have found a way around it.0 -

I was bemused to see inside an ATM , in a shopping mall, that behind the flap when it opened there were some notes aparently just lying there. It delivered my notes ok though.
It was too public to have a scam device fitted, but did make me wonder how they got there.0 -

The ATM in question actually says onscreen that if you see any device fitted don't try to remove it, so I didn't try and the police later confirmed that this would be unwise since you would then be on camera fiddling with the device, etc. Also, if I'd attempted to remove and been successful, there might well have been more money there than just my own and that's a bit awkward.''apply within''0 -

Thanks for sharing your experience and making people aware of the scam.0 -

I think the more important reason for that advice is that the criminal then knows you have spotted the device and have "their" money, putting you at risk.
Thanks for sharing your experience and making people aware of the scam.
Another reason is that you don't get your fingerprints/DNA all over it, which makes the police's job a wee bit harder. Remember the thief is likely to have been the last person to touch it (unless they are waiting for a build up of cash).''apply within''0
