With respect I wouldnt be inclined to use Gumtree. Most reputable companies will have own websites, HR depts store window ads etc..

You should just go to high street shops, or shopping centres. don't just look locally, travel a bit further afield. Get your CV out everywhere. It may be that they are not quite looking yet, or that you are too late maybe?

    Good luck!
  • When job hunting I always print off a stack of CV's and just take the around with me, alot of places just want a CV and if they want application forms I'll collect them all up and go and set in a coffee shop for a bit and basically copy my CV onto the Application forms and drop them off on the way back to the car.

If takes a day but on the run up to xmas you can apply for 15-20 jobs in a day. Plus I always think it looks better if you take the application form back the same day you get it.
  • Okay in support to the person earlier who said get off your ar%e my daughter has walked the streets of all the shops in are area and has handed out CVs and has applied for lots more on line even will to go up town and yet nothing okay she has only had 2 weeks work expereince in a shop but she cant get her foot in the door we have tried telling people she is looking for a weekend job we have check the Job Centre website every day and nothing. we have found lots of vancany but she keeps getting turned down very disappointing for someone willing to get off her !!!!!

With respect, this thread is about finding Christmas jobs and there are plenty of reputable companies advertising on MY local Gumtree for full/part time jobs, temp and permanent in all sorts of categories, including one for a receptionist in a Michelin star restaurant.

I would warn anyone against any marketing or get rich quick jobs you may see advertised, they are easy to spot.

Re Debenhams: don't fill out a paper application. I heard a member of staff at Debenhams say that, last year, the paper applications which people posted in boxes instore were not looked at and it was her job in January to shred all of them.

Our Boots and Superdrug have told me they are not taking anyone on this year.Re Argos I handed in my cv and app form to them. went in to enquire as I havent heard. They said they havent looked at the applications yet.
I've been hearing rumours that stores (not specifically the ones you've mentioned) are going down the route of using work placements from Work Program providers instead of hiring for the xmas period.
In fact in my area, a scheme called the "Community Action Programme" is being started in december, with the idea of placing jobseekers in full-time work "experience" for six months and it is suspected that the usual suspects are queing up to take advantage of this unpaid labour.

Walk the town with a stack of CVs. You have no retail experience but the key requirement of retail is customer service. Emphasise anything you have done which highlights good communication and social skills. Don't write an essay, managers will be going through dozens of them so get to the point quickly. Before you give over a CV hang around a bit and try and identify a manager or supervisor, these are the guys to approach. Be pleasant, polite and interested and don't drop your smile until you've left the shop. You just have to give them every possible reason to remember you over everyone else.

Oh, SPELLCHECK your CV, and spellcheck it again. Nothing gets a CV filed under B.I.N. quicker than sloppy mistakes.

In the current retail world job applications are a numbers game, don't get disheartened if it takes a while, but best of luck.

Tons of vacancies for Signet (H Samuel/Ernest Jones) however you MUST apply via their website this year. Ignore the stupid map pointers showing where the vacancies are - it's useless e.g. for a vacancy in Bath you have to click on a pointer indicating Manchester!!)

Click around the map until you find a local store pop up and away you go. Good luck!
