Of course they can - HR, payroll, other managers... It depends on the circumstances. What's the problem?0

An assistant manager telling his partner, then her mailing me via Facebook as she had separated from him, telling me that I had this condition and telling me I was to get the boot from my job, talked about etc0
-
Then submit a grievance with your evidence to the employer about the breach of confidential information.0

I have made a copy of my message,'to prove' I not making this up0

So your boss went home from work and did what everybody else probably does and discussed what had happened at work, with his bird; including you being off sick. Then they've fallen out and she's gossiped to you about it.
You might have that message as proof that she's told you that, but do you have any proof that he's told her anything other than you being off work because of x and y.0 -
Even thats priveleged information though surely?0

Yes, I do agree with that. It's a breach of confidence and that is all - the rest is hearsay and she has an axe to grind so there's no eveidence any of the rest of what she said is true. At most he would get a slapped wrist for having repeated something confidential. And whether that will improve anything is open to question.0 -

Dunno, if he's off with tonsillitis i wouldn't think it's privileged information and the boss could only have the information that's been provided to them and not medical notes.0 -

I don't agree. I think that information about health is always sensitive information, regardless of whether it's about tonsillitis, cancer, or an upcoming sex change operation.
However - I wouldn't expect the manager to get much more than a slap on the wrist. I think the OP's only real options are to submit a grievance to HR, or to have a quiet word with his manager and explain that he's upset about the Facebook messages. I'd be going for the latter myself...0 -
Il prob go and seek some advice at the local citizen advice bureau0
