Alternative to what? My only observation was that it would be worth something after a few years.

It's far from a great drive, but the criteria was for a lowish insurance car, on a budget, for above average mileage each year, the bulk of which is done on a daily cummute. The Golf ticks these boxes.

When i bought my Civic the Golf Diesels in the same price bracket were 2 litres (if there were any smaller engines - i cant remember - they seemed underpowered? i could be thinking about polos), and a much higher insurance group, hence why i went with the Civic.

It's definitely sluggish and insurance group 5 or 6 I think..
  • I will check out the Mazda3, thanks

    What are Nissan Notes like?

I've seen one just in my price range and insurance seemed affordable.

Nissan Note have that appearance that makes drivers think "oh f**k, OAP, get past this thing as soon as possible or be stuck doing 25mph for the next 30 miles!!"

It's much like coming up behind a Suzuki Wagon-R. I will overtake these given even the slightest opportunity, even if I have to take a wrong lane at a traffic island to do so. I hate looking in my rear view mirror and seeing queue of angry drivers who are wondering why I haven't overtaken the old fool.

Is it just me or does anyone else get an involuntary twitch in their right foot when they see this?

    And now this?

    Yep, still twitching..... :p

Some of the 2 litre Golf Diesel's are the SDI, 75bhp and slower than my Gran on her happy shopper!

I have £4000 max to spend on a car.

I drive approx 15000 miles per year with a 52 mile round trip to and from work.

The cars I have been looking at are -

    HONDA Civic 1.7i CDTI

    ASTRA 1.7 CDTI

    FOCUS 1.6 TDCI LX

I would be grateful for any advice on these or similar cars.

I have a six points for speeding and an accident within the last five years so need a lowish insurance group car.

Yes PeelerFart I have but thought insurance would be expensive, however i've just had a look and its only about £80 per year more than for a focus.

    Would you recommend the octavia?

My wife expecting number two so a bigger car would be more useful.

Excellent reputation and built with a bucket load of Golf parts.
Economical, comfortable and relatively cheap thanks to the badge snobs.

Got to be worth a look methinks.

Skoda Octavias - Big, comfy, well regarded and will hold their value
Ford Mondeos (but beware Dual Mass Flywheel and Injector problems, do your research before you buy!)
Skoda Fabia 1.4 Tdi if you can stand a smallish Hatch. Very good economical cars.
Jaguar X-Type 2.0d - estates are available in your price range. Check insurance though. Might surprise you!
Honda Accord 2.2Tdi's may just be dipping into your price range.

Go on to auto trader, put in a price bracket of £3,000-£4,000, diesel (if it must be a diesel) and a few other requirements, but leave make and model blank. You might be surprised what it trawls up for you. I'm sad enough that it's one of my favorite games!
