My computer keeps crashing and it says 'the problem occurred because your video card doesn't support the required version of DirectX. This version of Windows requires a video card that supports DirectX or higher.'
I've looked for this via Custom install and also the hardware wizard but it says it 'could not find a better adapter.'
It's an old Sony Vaio running Vista and the video adapter is a Radeon 9200 (if i'm looking in the right place). Can anyone advise me on what to do please.

what are you actually trying to run thats causing it to crash - i only ask since i beleive the 9200 can only handle upto directx 8.1 and although vista should be able to run on it, most new games etc require at least directx 9Drop a brand challenge

gonzo127 - I'm not sure what's causing it to crash because it happens when I turn it on. Sometimes I get the message come up on the screen when I turn it on and go into my account, and sometimes I get the blue screen with an error message on it and I just have to keep restarting it until I can get actually on it. I only use it as a spare when my main computer is broken and I just use it for getting my emails and looking on here...
Sorry - I forgot to add that DS used to use this computer for his schoolwork and games but he gave up using it because it kept crashing.0 -
ok do you know what the blue screen error message is?
have you ran the windows update recently as there might be more recent drivers for the system.
also if its only a spare system for emails and basic web browsing it might be worth while looking into one of the low requirement Linux distrobutions, something along the lines of Lubuntu or Linux Mint LXDE instead of windows, as doing this would bypass any windows related software problems - if its actually hardware related you will still have issues however if the problem is only intermitent then it is more than likely software/driver relatedDrop a brand challenge

I recommend that you downgrade to XP on that machine. What is the full model number?0

Yes, I try to do this every week anyway, even if the computer is not being used.

Sorry if' it's a silly question - but how would I do this? I think this computer is heading for the bin, but I'm just trying to keep it going as long as I can.0 -

Hi linni, ok well i am not totally sure on that error code, will try and have a look up on it in a bit.
as to Linux, well so long as its not a hardware fault, its surprisingly easy, basically you download the file for the version you have chosen for example Linux Mint LXDE from their website http://www.linuxmint.com/release.php?id=16 then burn of the image and follow the instructions http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/docs/user-guide/english_11.1.pdf
there is a lot more than just installation instructions in that guide but you can just read the installation instructions if you want toDrop a brand challenge

Make sure you have the latest graphics card driver and get it from ATI/AMD NOT Sony as the one on Sony's website will be a very old version. However as your card only goes up to DirectX 9, if you are trying to use something that needs DX10 or DX11 then its not going to run it.0 -
sorry other good instructions here for linux (this is Ubuntu's instructions) http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download however the instructions are the same just using a different downloaded ISO fileDrop a brand challenge
