Boiler Problems

We have a newish Worcester Greenstar boiler that we tried yesterday for the first time this year
It appears to run OK - Heating up the radiators with no issues or cold spots (no bleeding needed) - however it did not cut out and at a worryingly high pressure reading on the meter of 3.5 bar, I switched it off - I assume that there is supposed to be a pressure cut out ?

  • there is a pressure relief valve that will open when the pressure gets to high 3or4 bar

Correct and pressure should then drop. However there must be a problem for the pressure to get up to 3.5 bar. Is the fill loop connected and if so it is likely that it is passing towns water pressure to the system. Suggest check that valve is completely shut.

Depending which model you have it sounds like the expansion vessel may be flat or knackered.

    It is a 28i
What does the expansion vessel do - apart from "expand" - and what is it likely to cost to get it fixed ?
I assumed that there would be a failsafe release valve ??

The expansion vessel takes up the expansion of the system water when it gets hot.

It contains a rubber membrane, one side air (although technically it should be nitrogen) the other side the system water.

It could be that it has just gone flat.

Undo the car type valve on it and press the valve. If water comes out it is knackered, if air or nothing, then it needs recharging, whilst the boiler is drained, to approx 0.9 Bar.

How old is this "newish" boiler? WB normally come with a 2 year guarantee, mine has a 5 year warranty as it was fitted by a Worcester approved installer.
Fitted 18 months ago, it made a strange noise a couple of months ago. I phoned Worcester just for advice and they sent an engineer within 3 hours who fitted a new gas valve all free of charge.

All good info though it is sometimes possible to get a cupful or so of condensation out of a good expansion vessel.

you cannot compress water so to allow for water expansion you need an expansion vessel.

if it is broken you can let the water out of a rad just leave air in it with the valves open this will do the same job

this will work till you can get your expansion vessel repaired.

that is to say if this is your problem.

your boiler does have a failsafe release valve.

its called a presure relife valve and works at 3-4 bar

what setting is the boiler temps set to if it high turn it down

it could be a faulty stat

when its on does the burner switch on and off or is it on all the time

The boiler does not have a cut out that reacts to over pressure.
