freeview/freesat/freesat from sky instead of multi-room

Hi i would like some advice, I have sky world in the main living room, however, instead of multi-room @£10.25pm for the kids lounge, i would prefer something else, its for a tv with freeview built in, but we don't have a roof top aerial and we bought and tried various indoor aerials, but it hasn't worked for us, luckily all i can manage on their at the moment is cbbc/cbeebies/citv

The following is what i have been thinking about, but need more advice on each option, as what i decide is final; i don't want to then pay more later for something else.
  • roof top aerial + installation for freeview , not sure how much it would cost, any advice appreciated
  • freesat, happy to buy a freesat box !!, but how do i find out if my satalitte dish is single/twin/quad to feed the freesat line through. I had a look at the dish earlier and i could see 4 holes, however, with only 1 sky it was taking up 2 holes ??is that correct??, or does that mean its a twin ??confused??
  • freesat from sky - can i get this if i already subscribe to sky (this i think would be my preferred option)
I would prefer freesat as it has much more channels, but i will go with what is more economical.

another thing is even tho we don't have an external aerial, i have aerials ports in the house, do i need to do anything with them for the digital switchover, or does it happen automatically?

for more info: the reason i don't wish to have multi-room is the kids are banned/grounded from watching the whole array of kiddies channels especially the older chnls like Nickolodean and disney (my kids are only 6 & 4yrs old) during the week and i prefer the one-off costs rather than commiting to any more monthly payments.

I am happy to be guided to other options that I haven't thought about. So am looking for any advice that can help, as you can see i don't know too much about it all.

Hope all the above is clear, i have tried to explain the best I can, but am aware its all abit of a jumble

I assume you have Sky+ or Sky+HD in the living room. In which case, your dish will have a quad LNB (4 LNBs in one) and 2 are currently available for other cables to be connected.

One would be sufficient for a standard Sky box (£10 or so on ebay or free on Freecycle or Freegle) and that would receive all the free to air channels but, with a Freesat from Sky card (£25) would get a few additional free to view channels and put channel 5 on the EPG
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

No, take the card out of your HD box and the remaining channels are what the other box would get.

  • I am confused, are you using a portable aerial, or an aerial installed in your property (probably in the loft) ?

If your aerial can CBBC and Cbeebies you can get all the BBC channels, if you don't your receiver is not properly tuned and a factory reset may help.

An aerial works well for analogue, then you mostly likely get a digital signal after switch-over including the BBC, ITV1, ITV2, Channel 4, Channel 5, More4, and E4 and the HD channels. If it receiving a pre-switchover digital service, and for some transmitters it is a wideband aerial, you will receive a full service after switchover.
