Thanks for the help - lol its such a minefield! I prefer the sound of a yearly one. A customer of mine was telling me about https://www.switchmedia.co.uk

To try and get my head around this looking at these tarifs for example

    http://www.switchmedia.co.uk/hosting/

Is that saying for FTP access so I can upload my own created sites they want £48.50 a year? and all the dearer ones don't allow FTP access?

I'll have to start comparing them all night by night.

I had a look at SwitchMedia - to be honest there doesn't seem to be that much information about the packages, just summaries. I would expect to read in minute details what exactly is on offer before parting with my hard-earned.

Since the SwitchStart tariff is so basic in features, I imagine they're just extolling the virtues of the more trivial aspects of the offer, otherwise there would be very little to say about the tariff.

The other tariffs will surely offer FTP - how else would you upload files, apart from a clumsy file manager interface? Best to send an email to them just to clarify.
Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!

There are so many webhosts out there getting one thats good for you is more of a mission. I have some words of advise though

    1. Do not use any of the review sites online - most of the reviews on there are fake and are posted by the companies themselves

    Checkout
    https://www.webhostingtalk.com

Its a forum and I learnt so much from there

    2. There is nothing like unlimitted bandwith - you will always get what you paid for

    3. Webhosts in America tend to be cheaper than U.K hosts but there are very very slight complications (eg. if your domain is .com it will fail to turn up under UK searches)

    4. Know your needs - A webhost that works for me will not necessarily work for you

    Hope this helps

    Hi,

    webhosting can be a minefield.

think about what you actually want to do with the space - is it personal or business?
Is it legal? (you'd be surprised at what people want to host!)
What's the hosts t & c's like? Are they restrictive etc.
If it's for business then you'd be better off paying for a better service with sla's, full protection against D(D)os attacks etc., and this puts it way beyond the £10/month squad, but if it's just to promote your ebay bits then that might be overkill.
What support will you get? 24/7 or m-f 9-5? Telephone or email?

Loads of questions really, check your messages I've sent you a pm.
