I've registered a new domain through 1&1 internet ltd, they include free software called webbuilder to get your site up and running. I've realised this is far too basic and want to create my own webpages (as per previous post) and upload via ftp.
After not being able to find the FTP details on my login I rung 1&1 who informed me its £9.99 a MONTH for webspace and ftp! (and thats the most basic package)
Being totally new to all this the lady on the phone told me I can keep my domain registered with her and someone else can provide webspace and FTP is there any downside to this?
Is £9.99 reasonable?
Can anyone reccomend a good provider and price?
Thanks in advance

£9.99 is a on the high side tbh.
There is no disadvantage to having hosts and domains from a different provider. All you need to do is set up the link between the nameservers of your host and your domain name (usually done through the domain provider). This is not a signature...0 -

Cheap and I've found them to be good. Only problem is you can't transfer a .co.uk domain if that's what you have. Anything else is ok, just not .co.uk(!)."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
I have .co.uk !0

I bought a domain through 123-reg.co.uk for about £6.
I also use webspace from a different provider.Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!0 -
I'm with hostgator, costs around £5/month, depending on the conversion rate. And my domain is .co.uk
There are cheaper, but I don't know how good the service is support or feature wise - it also depends how much bandwith and space you need. This is not a signature...0 -
not sure why they quoted £9.99 /month i have a instant website with them and it cost no where in that region, I know theyy have changed their package names but have a look here for their full pricing

yes their webbuilder software is naff but instead in use Nvu, and have found it quite easy to manipulate..0 -
Depending on the traffic you are expecting you could host it yourself.0

I use catalyst2, I think it is about £14 a year. Does have bandwidth restrictions though. So if your site becomes super popular...0
