Hair "sticky" after washing

Head and Shoulders now do a colour safe version which I use occasionally when necessary. My hair is always very heavily coloured and I've had no problems with it stripping colour - even the red tones.
I agree though, regular H&S will remove dye faster than you can say it - unless of course you WANT it to!
Didn't know they do a colour version now. Might give that a go. The stripping colour has always put me off as my hair is heavily coloured (well, I say heavily, I did use Colour B4 to strip the red from my hair before I re-dyed it black and apparently the formula has a clarifying thing in it).Mayflower10cat wrote: »I stopped buying shampoos with SLS in (and silicone free) almost two years ago now. My hair stays cleaner for longer, which sounds odd I know! Many years ago a hairdresser was washing my hair and she said - 'you use Pantene, don't you, I recognise the smell.' I said I did, she was right. She said to avoid it as it's absolutely loaded with silicone and it coats your hair stopping colours or perms 'taking' so well. Why not try one of the DrOrganics shampoos & conditioners from Holland and Barrett - free of parabens/SLS - and see if your hair improves.
Thanks for the tip. I did use John Freida Radiant Red but now my hair is black so had no idea what it would do to the colour, so stopped using it. Then I started using TREsemme and I hated it. Made my hair feel so greasy and flat. Now I'm using Herbal Essences and I do have Happy Hair Days lying around too (which is apparently free from parabens etc and I have the one for coloured hair, but when I used it loads of my colour came out, despite me washing my hair in tepid/cold water!)
Will have a look at DrOrganics. Thank you.busiscoming2 wrote: »I had the sticky hair syndrome too, Changed shampoo and conditioner, no more stickiness.
I've done that a few times recently and I still have the problem. I've even taken to detaching the shower head and separating my roots and rubbing hard to try and remove the stickiness but it's still there. :think:2019 Wins

I used to get this and I would wash my hair with washing up liquid, then with a different shampoo and conditioner and it would be fine. I don't know what washing up liquid would do to hair dye though!
I use Naked Detox shampoo and conditioner now and I don't get the build up at all
Apparently washing-up liquid is one of the things used to fade colour when a hair dye job goes wrong.
I'm willing to spend more on a shampoo and conditioner if it means that my hair will benefit from it.
As vain as it sounds, apart from the recent stickiness, I love my hair.2019 Wins

Lady M I have just started using TIGI superstar and I am loving it! I have long hair and two pumps is enough for a good lather and my hair is supersoft after!0

Mine used to get that sticky feeling too. I find Aussie shampoo is best for my hair - it's usually on offer too!0

You may have a slight fungus problem on your scalp.
I've heard that a cider vinegar solution is a good for getting greasy residue out of hair AND it's anti-fungal. I don't know what the mix is, sorry.0 -
OP, have you tried Redken's clarifying shampoo? Its more colour safe then the H&S (and sorry but the colour version is no better at retaining colour then any of them!). Do you have any idea what could have caused it? Did you recently start using a new shampoo or conditoner? New hair dye? do you think it could be hormonal or stress related? Being that its just at your roots, have you changed your diet or taken different medication/vitamin or mineral pills in the last month?
Hows the rest of your hair? Is it very frizzy or breaking easily? Sometimes having gummy hair can be because it has protein issues.0 -

One of my friends swears by Tigi. Is it worth the price?
Wash it twice a week. Would like to do it more, ideally, but I have M.E so never have the energy to do it more than that.
I leave it roughly about 8 weeks before I touch up.
I never use any other products on my hair really. I used to use a leave in conditioner on my ends and sometimes do an intensive mask on the ends too but never more than once a week, and is more like once a month.
Letting it dry naturally takes some getting used to but once youve cleared the problem you would probably be ok on a low heat and not very often, thats what I do anyway, Tigi products are really good and imo worth the money, dd and I have have very different hair and they work well for both of us, they are often on offer in TK Maxx if you have one nearby if not you can get some good deals on Look Fantastic and the other ususal beauty sites:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0 -
Thanks everyone for the replies.
Jennie - The rest of my hair is okay. Not frizzy and doesn't break easily but is quite thick.:o I haven't started using anything new on my hair. The only thing I can say that has been new is that my meds have been upped and swapped around.:o It wouldn't surprise me if it is stress-related. I'm chronically ill with M.E and have various mental health problems. I'm always worrying and over-analysing everything.:o
Will look into all of the products suggested. Thank you.2019 Wins

Hope it all works out, if your worried your "over-analysing" maybe go see a hair dresser for a (free) consultation, see what they say and what their opinion is.0 -
My hair went through a stage like this. It drove me mad, and like you I was super careful making sure it was rinsed properly, switching products etc. In the end, it turned out my brush needed cleaned!
I'm usually pretty good about cleaning it regularly, but I must have let it go too long this time. No problems since.
