Hair "sticky" after washing

Hey everyone.

I've been having a problem with my hair for the past couple of months.

After washing my hair, parts of the roots seem "sticky". I spend ages rinsing my hair to make sure all the shampoo/conditioner is out.

However, after blowdrying my hair, parts of the roots seem "sticky". It's not all of the roots, mainly the ones at the front to half way over my head.

Sometimes I have dandruff and sometimes I don't. I don't use anti-dandruff shampoos because I have dyed hair and I don't want to strip the colour, hence the reason I'm wary of trying clarifying shampoos too.

At first I thought it was the shampoo or conditioner I was using, so I changed and my hair is still the same.

Does anyone have any tips on what could be the problem or how to sort it?

My hair is my pride and joy so it's really annoying me. :(

  • I've had this but for me changing my shampoo helped.

Try some home remedies like egg yolk and oil etc for on the days you wont be going out and then wash it out the night before. Oil does take about 2-3 washes to get out though but it makes the hair silky soft

Also this is my tip for so many people but i don't know if this is any good for you as you have dyed hair. Head and shoulders conditioner. This conditioner is the best conditioner I have ever used. EVER. It really works and leaves my healthy and very manageable.

Oh another thing... Try washing your hair with shampoo as normal but if you use conditioner ONLY use it for the bottom half of your hair. Start below ur ears and don't get any in the roots. This might help you with the sticky feeling

    Thank you. :)

I only ever put conditioner on the ends of my hair because I have naturally oily roots anyway and I don't want to make my roots go into overdrive.

Head and Shoulders is renowned for stripping the hair of dye, unfortunately. :(

Thanks for the egg yolk and oil tip. :)

The clarifying shampoo will strip your colour anyway, DD and I used to have the same problem and it turned out to be a silicone build up from various shampoos and conditioners and also using heat which hardens the silicone and you cant get it off:eek: it took us a lot of research to work this out and the only solution was to change shampoo and conditioner obviously and stop using heat on our hair, this was very difficult at first but we got used to it and our hair started to look better after about 3/4 weeks but it got better still as time went on, we use Tigi products mostly I use Superstar which has no cones in it as I sometimes blowdry (gently) my fringe and dd uses the moisture one in the orange bottle as she never uses heat, we both regularly (but not always) use head and shoulders smooth and silky as well- hth:)
Thank you for this site Martin

How often do you wash and condition your hair?

    and

How long do you leave it before dyeing/touching up your hair again?

Do you use any other products in your hair, I used to use a ton of hairspray on my mohican (long long time ago) & the only thing that would get that out would be washing it in a solution made with bath cubes, not sure you can still buy them though.

Head and Shoulders now do a colour safe version which I use occasionally when necessary. My hair is always very heavily coloured and I've had no problems with it stripping colour - even the red tones.

I agree though, regular H&S will remove dye faster than you can say it - unless of course you WANT it to!
  • I stopped buying shampoos with SLS in (and silicone free) almost two years ago now. My hair stays cleaner for longer, which sounds odd I know! Many years ago a hairdresser was washing my hair and she said - 'you use Pantene, don't you, I recognise the smell.' I said I did, she was right. She said to avoid it as it's absolutely loaded with silicone and it coats your hair stopping colours or perms 'taking' so well. Why not try one of the DrOrganics shampoos & conditioners from Holland and Barrett - free of parabens/SLS - and see if your hair improves.
  • I had the sticky hair syndrome too, Changed shampoo and conditioner, no more stickiness.

I used to get this and I would wash my hair with washing up liquid, then with a different shampoo and conditioner and it would be fine. I don't know what washing up liquid would do to hair dye though!

I use Naked Detox shampoo and conditioner now and I don't get the build up at all :)

Didn't know about the heat thing! I only blowdry my hair, never straighten it, but I always have it on full heat so maybe I should try letting it dry naturally.
One of my friends swears by Tigi. Is it worth the price?

Wash it twice a week. Would like to do it more, ideally, but I have M.E so never have the energy to do it more than that. :(

I leave it roughly about 8 weeks before I touch up.

I never use any other products on my hair really. I used to use a leave in conditioner on my ends and sometimes do an intensive mask on the ends too but never more than once a week, and is more like once a month.
