Can They Do This?

Options
I have just spoken to our electric supplier at work about our renewal, which is 29th Nov, and they tell me it has rolled over to 2012, they say they have sent a letter which has not been received, and the rates have nearly doubled, can they do this, they say there is no negotiation and all the companys do this.

If it's a business supply then it does seem to be normal practice unfortunately.

We signed with British Gas Electricity for 12 months with what we understood (over the phone) was one months notice requirement. The contract was incredibly simple and contained nothing about this.

We were surprised to receive a letter some time before renewal saying it would renew automatically unless we gave 3 months notice. Checking the small print we also saw that our rates had more than doubled.

We thought 3 months notice on a 12 month contract was a joke and sent written notice immediately.

We then took out a brand new contract with the same supplier at a lower rate than we had previously paid and fixed for 2 years!

Worked out well because we responded to the letter but not sure what the actual legal position is, sorry.

I would be tempted to follow it up and stand your ground though.
