I have done a search for this, but there do not seem to be any up to date threads on the subject.
I had Adobe photoshop starter but it no longer works for some reason, therefore, I need something free and basic so that when I insert the memory stick a menu pops up and I can save my photos to my computer then e mail them later.
I downloaded Gimp but have not ben able to fathom how to use it! My PC is rather slow and I just run out of patience after a while. I will sort that out in due course, (have printed off the relevant sticky) but just want to save my photos for now.
Can anyone help please?

If you're used to photoshop and couldnt get your head round GIMP then you could try http://www.gimpshop.com/ Contrary to its name it isn't a fetish sex shop but instead a different front end to GIMP that makes it much closer to photoshop in appearance/ function.0

I use Picasa, but I'm surprised the operating system of the OP's computer doesn't include software enabling her to open and save a photo from a memory stick.0

There are - I posted on at least two in the last couple of weeks!
And I'll say the same thing:
Hornil Style Pix - Free version:
http://hornil.com/en/downloads/
Faststone viewer:
http://www.faststone.org/
Both are straightforward, resource-easy, effective and far easier to use than the impenetrable behemoth that is Gimp!0 -
What do you actually want to be able to do?
If all you want is to copy photos to your PC you don't need any software.Stompa0 -
If you find GIMP a bit challenging, you do not want Photoshop!
Also look at irfanview for photos - it is not for powerfil manipulation per se, but it has a nice batch processor which is useful and has some capability.0 -
Yup - Irfanview is good too but IMO it is getting a bit long in the tooth now and the two I've linked above far surpass it in most ways.0

It really depends on what you want to do, and to what level.
If you were using some of the more advanced functions with Photoshop then I'd recommend persisting with the GIMP, it may be a little fiddly here and there but it's worth it.
You might also have a look at Paint.NET0 -
For these versions of Windows
RahmanImager - This is the last freeware version so no need to check for updates

Thanks all,
As I said in the original post, all I want to do is insert the memory stick from my camera, have a window pop up to tell me how to save my photos to my computer - simple (like me!).
That's what used to happen, now for some reason it does not. I had Adobe photoshop starter and now I have not. No idea why it disappeared.0
