TV for wii

I have just bought a wii thingie to do keep fit stuff in privacy of own home. OH now not happy to have room filled up with me exercising, so I plan to buy CHEAP tv and exercise privately in spare room. Please can someone advise me about how complicated (expensive) a TV I need to have to do the job. We are unlikely to watch it as TV, though I suppose it ought to work in cases of emergency TV viewing. Where do I find a nice cheap one ? (prices online for TVs look to be £300 up and don't want (or need ?) to spend that much if at all possible.) Many thanks, kind people, Morgan.

Get one for nothing on Freecycle or Freegle. Almost all TVs have the necessary scart socket.

People are offering all sizes now digital switchover has passed or is near. I could have obtained a 32", a 28", a 26" and two 14" TVs (one with built-in VCR) in the past week.

Assuming your "As far away from the sea as is possible in England" profile description of your location means you are, indeed, approximately at map refence SP3696, you are about 16 miles away from the very powerful transmitter at Sutton Coldfield so an internal aerial may well be adequate - particularly if you have the Wii TV in a room with line of sight to the WNW.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • The wii fit is good fun but will simply not get or keep you fit.

    Rubbish!
After 4 1/2 weeks in intensive care last year and all of it spent in bed, I came home with no muscle whatsoever. I worked up gently on the Wii to jogging and stepping for up to an hour a day and I got to the stage where I was fitter than I'd ever been. And I played squash for 15 years at a reasonable standard.
  • I imagine it would be great for recuperating after an intensive operation leaving you with no muscle mass, includes bit of motivation and boredom alleviation... but that's not quite the same is even semi serious fitness training is it?

I agree its better than sitting in front of a PS3/dvd but its not going to keep you fit.
  • No squabbling please ! I have very arthritic knees and can walk only very short distances - the less I exercise the stiffer and more overweight I get so the wii is intended to get me gently starting to move about more with a view to taking more 'serious' exercise once I have a bit more mobility. I do swim but not every day and have a friend in the same situation who has recently lost 2 stone as a result of gentle (private !) wii exercise and diet, so I am sure it's got to be better than permanent couch potatoing. I am certainly not seeing the wii as an alternative to 'real' exercise (I have a daughter who's a triathlete and I knlw what real exercise looks like) but I am hoping it will gently get me started moving about more.

I never thought of Freecycling, and will hunt there - thanks for suggestion
  • Sorry MorganLeFay you are right, I can see it has its niche, good luck with it.

Not quite what I meant. I am on the whole fitter than before the op (ruptured aorta aneurism ) and strange that you should poo poo the idea when 2 chartered physios suggested it would be good.

Maybe you didn't read my reply? I clearly stated I thought it would be "great" in your circumstances. Certainly no poo poo.
  • After years of wanting a Wii, I finally got one only to play it a couple of times and then put it in the corner and not look at it for a couple of months. Typical.

I think the Wii is great for gentle exercise - either with the Wii Fit or some of the other games. You don't need to get down to a gym, and can do it in the privacy of your own home as often or as little as you like. Great while you build up a basic level of fitness of mobility in your own case morganlefay.

Any TV will work with it, and these days you can get the smaller LCT flat screeens for not a lot of money. Try somewhere like Richer Sounds - http://www.richersounds.com/products/home-cinema/lcd-and-plasma/lcd-tv - they have 19" models for less than £100.

The basic connection from a Wii to a TV is the SCART cable that it comes with, and all TV's should have at least one of these connections.

    Hope that helps !
