Anyone got advice on a high mileage vehicle?

I've been thinking about changing my car recently, due to it getting a old and having high miles on the clock. I've been told by alot of people that if the car is driven sensibly and serviced regularly that there shouldn't be any need for expensive repair bills anytime soon. I just dont want to get to the stage where i have something major go wrong, and it costs almost the price of the little car to fix it!
Im driving a 2001 [51] Audi A3 TDi 5 door with 147k on the clock. I used to commute over 100 miles a day for work, however i've moved right next to work and i now do 4 miles per day. I love my wee car and its never had any problems, and i've only had to replace things due to wear and tear like tyres, brake discs/pads etc.
Anyone else got advvice on high mileage motors?
thanks

I had a Audi A4 2002 with 140K from brand new. The only thing i every replaced apart from services and tyres was one wiper motor. I was a big mistake selling it as my newer corsa has cost over £400 in repairs in the first 6 months0

Unless you want something more exciting (ie petrol) then just drive it until it blows up in a big way.0

With audi you've got the reliability factor as well. They're built to last.
Sorry to hear about the Corsa. I suppose you must have been thinking the same as me at the moment then? You can throw alot of money into a new/er car but they depreciate so quickly that its maybe hard to justify sometimes. My little car was bought in cash and hasn't cost me much other than that.
Maybe in these days of austerity i should hold off and get my moneys worth from what i've already bought and am enjoying

I'd like something more exciting sometime in the future, but im going to have to wait until i get my salary increase. That'll help. I think i'd still like to go for a diesel though. Possibly something like a 325/30d BMW. Reasonably economical when driven sensibly, but still got a bit of excitement when you want it!0 -
Don't buy another diesel to do 4 miles a day0

Better still, don't do 4 miles a day in the car as that is likely to cause more problems as the car never gets hot.
Maybe cycling to work is the way forward for me! Although we've just moved "upnorth" and i hear the winters are a right nightmare. Cycling on sheet ice... now that could get the adrenaline pumping before work!!0 -

If you dont drive like a looney, keep it. I have a 58plate passat estate with 175K miles on the clock as a company car. It has never needed any more than the standard service every 20k miles and not used a drop of oil.
Its the 3rd passat iv'e taken over 160k in the 3 years i have my car. and have a nice new one comming soon passat again.
The engine vw/audi/skoda/seat/ are all the same and very reliable.
Also if you sell your 10 year old audi with 147k on clock you wont get much. so may as well wait till goes bang and save the cash till then.:money:0 -
My Mondeo is on 160k. Doesn't even use oil between services. I'll keep it until it dies even though I'd really like a new shape one.0
