A UK vodafone PAYG sim (available free from their website), enabled with vodafone passport may be useful for longer calls.
Cost to make call to UK is 75p per call + whatever you would pay per minute if you were calling within the UK.
Cost of receiving a call is 75p per call (not per minute). Person calling you would just pay their normal rate (and inclusive minutes can be used)
With any of the NZ sims it will of course be free to receive a call at anytime, and there are cheap 0844/0845/0870 callthrough providers for people wanting to call you, from 6p per minute.

Telecom New Zealand doesn't use the same technology as the UK networks. You'd have to to use Vodafone, either with a local VF sim or another sim roaming (like O2 UK or Voda UK).
If your just going to get an occasional call, Vodafone passport will work in both NZ and OZ on the Vodafone networks. Elsewhere Vodafone is fairly expensive and the other UK networks are fairly pricey.
Using one of the java programs (like smsbug), texts will cost a few pence each to send. Otherwise, they will range from about 30p - 49p per text using a UK sim.
If your going to traveling about beyond OZ and NZ, then consider a prepaid sim from:

Kia Ora!
I did that, and I bought $10 credit, and I came home with $2 after 3 weeks (and I made a few long calls), so I guess buying one there is really good value.
